A pregnant friend (age 23) has Hep C. She was told there is a "window" after normal delivery when "radiation" could be done 2 eliminate her Hep C. She was also told that the baby would not have Hep C. Anyone heard about this?

I have no idea about the radiation, but I have 3 kids and I had 2 of them while I had the Hep C, and my doc told me there was only a 4 percent chance of it passing to the baby. And that I shouldnt worry about it.

Since my 82 yr old mom has Hep C, according to my doc is probable I got it from her when she birthed me during a high viral load in her system 52 yrs ago! and my younger brother had Hep C as well, but my younger sister does not. I was diagnosed only a year ago and my bro before me. Either bro and me got it from mom or is a fluke coincidence.

Dillytime, do they really treat Hep C with radiation? I have never heard of this!
I have heard that it is possible for the baby to have Hep C. The chance is low, but should be looked into.

HCV is a blood-borne disease, and since birthing a child is a naturally somewhat bloody task, there IS a chance that the baby may get HCV. Again, the risk 's are small, but they ARE there. I had my youngest tested after I found out I was infected.... she was clean. It wouldn't hurt to have the baby tested after a year or so, since this IS a slow-moving disease..... but don't expect most insurances to cover the test!! Mine didn't!! (Back then we had BC/BS)

I'm currently pregnant, was recently diagnosed with HCV, my genotype is 3a and my viral load is 75000 or so. My doctor did not tell me about any type of radiation treatment but said I would undergo a 24 week treatment after the baby is born and I am not breastfeeding. She said it is possible to pass it on to the baby but the chances were low, especially since my viral load is relatively low. The chances are actually higher with a C-section than natural delivery from what I have read.
