When I used to live in Miramar which is just outside of Fort ladu, I went to try out the Cuban sandwich everybody was saying was so good. Well, I tried it but it was truly a disappointment because the Cuban sandwich didn't taste anything like the ones I used to eat in NYC or across the river in West New York, New Jersey. The sandwiches made up north of Florida are so much fresher and better tasting and they offer all of the ingredients that a traditional Cuban Sandwich must have in order to call it "authentic".
My Abuelo and my Father's Cuban sandwiches were just out of this world and I'm probably a little biased when I say this but, Man were they sooo so good!
Now the really fantastic tasting of the Cuban sandwiches (Yes there are a few versions) is the sandwich called "Medianoche".
There is nothing like the Famous Crispy Cuban Sandwich. It is a hot pressed sandwich. Made with roasted fresh pork roast, ham & cheese It is so good. The other famous counterpart is the Media Noche sandwich, translates to the Midnight Sandwich.
In Cuba when the people were out partying or clubbing late at night they would stop off and request a snack sandwhich not as big as the Cuban thus the name Media Noche basically the same as a Cuban sandwich, a Pressed sandwhich but much smaller and made with sweet egg bread very much looks like a hot dog bun; but a real treat and not as filling as the big Cuban Sandwich. Either way you will love these two sandwiches.
There are a few variations of Cuban sandwiches like one that is drenched in Mojo, or a smoked Cuban sandwich also but for me only the first 2 traditional Cuban sandwiches I consider authentic with all of the rest essentially consisting of what is not a Cuban sandwich. And IMHO, the only way to cook the pork is to roast a pork loin whole and then slice it diagonally into strips and the pork is first marinated with mojo. Otherwise the pork isn't authentic at all.
Now, if you're familiar with Cuban food there is a dish called "Ropa Viejas" y Picadillo con Arroz. Have you tried any of these?
