Hepatitis C Support Group
Hepatitis C is a blood-borne viral disease which can cause liver inflammation, fibrosis, cirrhosis and liver cancer. The hepatitis C virus (HCV) is spread by blood-to-blood contact with an infected person's blood. Many people with HCV infection have no symptoms and are unaware of the need to seek treatment. Hepatitis C infects an estimated 150-200 million people worldwide.
The usual course of action is to first treat the cause, in our case it is HCV. Harvoni will not repair the liver, but it will kill the virus and stop any further damage caused by it. Only time will tell if your liver can recover on its own afterwards, or if you will need additional treatment, or even a transplant.
The side effects dont seem to be too bad with Harvoni itself. However it may be paired with Ribavirin, which is mild to some and nasty to others.
You must absolutely abstain from drinking, and watch other meds that may be harmful to your liver, such as Tylenol.
If you do NOT get a transplant, being rid of the disease will prolong your life and improve the quality of it.
I believe all insurance will give you Harvoni if you have cirrhosis. Gillead also offers a copay assistance that will reduce your out of pocket costs considerably.
I am speaking first hand here. I just took my last Harvoni pill last week. So far I am virus free. I am a transplant recipient.
It is so easy to give in. Even when I had a transplant, having the disease was just kicking the ball down the road. If you can get on the treatment- DO IT!!!
I know for myself personally, my liver was starting to turn on me and make me really sick. My stomach was bloating up and it hurt. My last biopsy in 2011 stated Stage 2/3 fibrosis, but I could not get treatment until 2014, so I know for a fact more damage occurred.
Now afterwards: It has been 1 year since I finished treatment.
I feel like a new person. I forgot how it felt to be "normal".
that darn virus was attacking everything in my body.
I agree you should STOP the Hep C from doing more damage to you!! It is not just your liver, it causes damage in many different places and a lot of pain throughout your body.
Sovaldi is in Harvoni just for your information. I had genotype 3a so I had to do the Sov/riba and Harvoni was not out yet anyway.
My advice is to do the treatment, hang in there and you might be very pleasantly surprised!! I know just stopping the Hep C from attacking me, stopped my low grade fevers, nausea, headaches, body pain - I could go on and on.
God Bless you and keep posting .
It keeps bouncing back & forth from discussions to advice column.
Thanks.
the rest is up to you ,,luck and your body ..you can help by eating Kale/other green veggies ,protein, anti oxidants ..(colored fruits and veggies) and eating less salt very little sugar and less junk food really helps
NO alcohol..
as for the sides they range from barely anything to some really tough ones
Iam lucky to have mild ones ..and feel better than I have in years and I am only 9 weeks in on a 24 week tx
I would suggest go for the TX asap .if you wait the damage just gets worse .. I have gone from a MELD score of 26 to 17 in just 9 weeks and hope to be taken off the transplant list at least for a good number of years to come
All the best ..
