Hepatitis C Support Group
Hepatitis C is a blood-borne viral disease which can cause liver inflammation, fibrosis, cirrhosis and liver cancer. The hepatitis C virus (HCV) is spread by blood-to-blood contact with an infected person's blood. Many people with HCV infection have no symptoms and are unaware of the need to seek treatment. Hepatitis C infects an estimated 150-200 million people worldwide.
In the second study, described in the same issue, Rafael Brcena and colleagues with the Hospital Ramn y Cajal Liver Transplant Group in Madrid looked at the safety and antiviral efficacy of prolonged intravenous silibinin started immediately before liver transplantation and continuing into the post-transplant period."
So, it would only work if the" silibinin started immediately before liver transplantation and continuing into the post-transplant period."
"HCV RNA relapsed in all patients, however, a median of 21 days (range 16-28 days) after discontinuing silibinin."
I don't think this will help anyone who's been transplanted without having the silibinin immediately started IV prior to transplant. And then continued thru post transplant period of at least 12 weeks. And then continuing to treat with a course of SOC to ensure that relapsing will not happen.
But for people who have already been transplanted, this will not work as it emphasizes that administering the silibinin has to start immediately prior to transplant... Meaning myself and anyone else who's already been transplanted.
I believe however, this treatment when combined with immediate follow-up of a course of SOC tx will be beneficial to patients that are waiting for a transplant. And soon enough, that SOC will be interferon free! Good article Kramer.
