I have been denied Harvoni...twice. The logic was that since I did Solvaldi and failed to clear the virus over the summer, and one of the ingredients of Harvoni is Solvaldi, my virus has mutated and is "educated" to this drug and will not respond to treatment.
In the past when I did interferon and ribabvirin for an extended period of time and was deemed a non-responder, I was told to wait a couple years before trying another treatment regiment because of the way the virus mutates. So I waited and when I started up again, I changed drug manufactures in hopes of a different response but to no avail.
Now my question is:
Q. Is the virus capable of mutating against these new line of drugs. As I understand it, they are called Protease inhibitors.
If my drug supplier "SAV-RX" is correct then fine, I have been denied. If my drug supplier is not correct then I want to take the clinical facts to the benifit plan administrator and demand an appeal from the board of directors.
I had high hopes a couple of days ago because Anthem made a deal with Gilead who supplies Harvoni only to find out that although my insurance is threw Anthem, my meds come from SAV-RX I'm feeling like bean counters are holding my life in their hands.
I need facts. I cannot seem to find the answer to my question.

Abbvie now has a tx that is FDA approved. Can't remember the name of it. Geno 1's need ribavirin with it, so that's not so great, but maybe it would work for you. (No Sovaldi with Abbvie tx - Sovaldi is owned by Gilead, as you prolly know.)
I failed tx twice - null responder to SOC and also to SOC + Daclatisvir (NS5a inhibitor).
Did you take Sovaldi by itself? They should have given you Simeprevir with it - that's what I was going to take until Harvoni came along.
From what I understand, it takes 2 years to clear a resistance to mutations.
Hepatologist told me Viekira is approved for 1b. If you are 1a you have to take Ribavarin too.
He was going to prescribe Harvoni alone for me but now I am going to question him about the Riba too (although I really don't want to take it). I don't even know if I will get approved but I'm going to fight like hell.
Do you have a hepatologist or a GI doctor?
