If you are not in any pain and just feeling something rough...and if cost is not an issue... maybe you could see your dentist and find out if it is something that needs immediate attention or can wait.

*IF* an x-ray of the tooth shows it needs a root canal, then ask if it is urgent or if it can wait. *IF* it does need attention urgently, then ask your liver doc.

i developed PAIN in my jaw shortly after starting tx and dentists said the molar needed root canal or to come out. I waited and the pain went away and that was 3 mos ago and i still have done nothing, even thou I'm now done with tx!! dentist says it's abscessed and will blow up on one day. I said I'll wait till then and she is not that happy with my decision. Said it's also possible the abscess could effect the adjacent tooth. I am in no rush, however....

Bottom line is this and i am sure this is what your liver doc would say:

If it is a NECESSITY and HAS to done and cannot wait, then you do it and deal with it even on TX. But if not, then wait.

Thanks WG! I guess I'll take a wait and see attitude for another week or so, or first hint of any pain, I'll go in. At that point, it'll only be 5 weeks left of TX. I think I am hyperfocusing on it now that I can feel an "edge" with my tongue. To be honest, I really can't afford a root canal, but I can't afford to lose any more molars either. Sucky, sucky, suck. Damn Jelly Beans!!

What WG said - exactly. I had to have a back molar extracted right before I started tx - because it had to be done, and although I had the meds I hadn't started yet, HCV doc put me back a couple of weeks as far as starting tx. Why exactly I don't know, but since we COULD do it that way, we did. That said, my nurse told me recently that they've had patients who had to have surgery (different types, some serious) during tx, and it worked out fine. Of course, they'd rather that didn't happen - immune system issues maybe - but the point is that IF something MUST be taken care of during tx, then it must be taken care of - all docs must know your tx status, of course.

I'm thinking but can't really think of any reason whyone would postpone dental work? There is no drug interaction that I can think of, no increased risks that come to mind.

first round of tx i had all kind's of dental work done. root canal extraction fillings. the inf really brings out the problems..i would go to the dentist you onle have one set of teeth. they don't grow back once they abcess they get pulled too late for a root canal. I spent 4 four years as a dental tech in the air force. peace

I will! Thanks everyone. I couldn't figure out where or why I'd heard that, but figured it had something to do with risk of infection or increased risk of bleeding, maybe. I'll let you know what happens. ;-)

I think the riba causes tooth sensitivity as well as gum sensitivity. I paid extra attention to my oral health while taking the riba. Not by going to the dentist but by keeping mouth rinsed and teeth brushed after all meals with sensodyne toothpaste with enamel protection...

I do also remember the riba can cause us to be more susceptible to germs and viruses so I have not gone to the dentist yet even for my cleaning. Plan to very soon though. Take care :)

I am on week 7 as of today. But I had 5 teeth pulled the Friday before I started tx on Monday morning. Did not have any complications. And was able to finish all antibiotics. After I get done with tx I will go back for partials.

There ya go, beachy - your call! I skipped the dang root canal on my back molar - had the humongous b*tch pulled out. Of course, it was a back one, so it wasn't such a difficult decision. Yeah, it wasn't quite a party or anything, but the pain was G-O-N-E.

I went to the dentist on SOC tx for routine cleaning. Had been undie for over a month at that point. I had no issues with it. I have HIV too and that doesn't excuse me. I do want to keep all of my teeth! Well not my wisdoms. Had those all removed last December. Good times!!
