Hepatitis C Support Group
Hepatitis C is a blood-borne viral disease which can cause liver inflammation, fibrosis, cirrhosis and liver cancer. The hepatitis C virus (HCV) is spread by blood-to-blood contact with an infected person's blood. Many people with HCV infection have no symptoms and are unaware of the need to seek treatment. Hepatitis C infects an estimated 150-200 million people worldwide.
However, you know the CDC advises it can be contracted through sexual activity.
Many people do not really know exactly how they got hcv. There are too many possible sources.
Leaving a person because they have hcv? Most people don't know they have it. Everyone needs to practice safe behaviors.
I understand your concerns, they are valid and real. No one wants to be infected with HCV, however like you say, the risk is extremely low.
Many of us here on the board have been married for years before we found out our status, and I'm not aware of any infections of spouses.
I would urge you to find a doctor in your area that specializes in Hep C treatment, and make an appointment for you and your husband. Have a frank and honest conversation about your sexual practices. The doctor should be able to address your concerns and make recommendations to keep you safe.
Good luck.
Hubby knew about it, we have been married 37 years and never used protection. I am fortunate he is okay.
My Hep doc told him that condoms were not necessary for us (I am also past menopause). He suggested my Hubby could get tested for the Hep C virus mostly because he came from a generation that has it a lot, but do not know it.
We have been okay all this time........I would have been devastated if my Hubby left me because I made a mistake in the past.
He made them too and we both look past that.
I'll be honest with you, since it is male and you are female, I would prefer a condom. If you think about it (I don't want to put too much
on this post as I want to keep it clean).
Your guy can get treatment, but they have come a long way from using shot, etc. The treatments are much easier now and a blessing.
Good luck
But the new treatments are MUCH better, most people can tolerate them with moderate to no side effects, although some don't seem to fare so well.
That's why this board is mostly dead now, there's really no need for those treating now to have a place to bitch and moan.
You might want to encourage him to pursue treatment again. The hard part is getting insurance to pay for it.
Bob
No one caught it from me.
However, people living together can share it via razor blades or toothbrushes or anything that might pass blood. HCV can live on such surfaces for quite a long time.
Has your boyfriend looked into treatment? It is very treatable today - CURABLE - depending on genotype. If he ha snot been to a GI or ID specialist, I urge him to.
On a side note, as far as leaving him when you learned...I personally would be more concerned that the reason he quit using is because of probation. That comes from an ex-ddict.
