Hepatitis C infects an estimated 150-200 million people worldwide.

A nasty hangover can last well past the weekend. Abusing alcohol today can have serious health repercussions years from now, in the form of increased cancer risk - most notably, breast cancer - or other serious illnesses such as high blood pressure, liver cirrhosis or stroke.

I like the topic. Media attention can alter patterns over time. Unfortunately, binge drinking is often a compulsion. some people plan to drink all weekend, or get drunk as a skunk at a wedding. Perhaps that can be changed. For others, once they start drinking, they can't stop. Health scare tactics don't reach those.
Media blitz has a big impact. Look what its done to smoking!

Ptriss, I agree completely.

The first time I got drunk I was 13. I drank a half a huge bottle of HOT Mogen David blackberry wine. Nasty stuff. Of course I got sicker than a dog. At that point, most people would swear off drinking for life, at least while they were still puking.

Not me. I decided to go ahead and drink the second half... maybe it would be different this time!

My point is that for myself and many others, binge drinking is a powerful compulsion. I doubt if raising awareness would have worked for me. Good information though for those who aren't wired like me.

College kids are the worst offenders. The ERs near college camousus are oiverflowing every weekend 0- starting THURSDAY with alcohol poisening.

MrOso - I did the same. My first "frat party" while still in HS. Passedout and it scared the bejeezus ouit of me. Stopped me from drinking on the spot - turned to drugs - teehee! That's what some people call a RocknRoll genuius! NoT!

Oh goodness, Kramer we must be fairly close in age dear friend. CCR yes, but Boones Farm strawberry hill and MD20-20 was my poison. 16 yrs old. Never liked the hard stuff after ingesting Jack Black @ a bluegrass festival . Jack and I don't get along. Nope.

And rass, I don't know if college students are the worst offenders. At least they have the excuse of being young and foolish. Unfortunately, my only excuse is being foolish...

Compulsion for me too. I can stop and not drink for weeks, but I don't like it. Reality is too much to take at times.

I was a serious serial binge drinker - that's why it took me so long to believe and accept that I was an alcoholic.. but the deal was, I couldn't drink on nights when I had to work the next day because I always drank until I blacked out! Scares the shit outta me now to think about it, but back then it didn't. I'd stop and get two six-packs on the way home from work on Friday, change clothes and put another set of clothes in the car, and go to happy hour with the other teachers - only I was LIT when I got there. Then I'd drink until they all left, get back in my car with that other six pack and ........ by then I was blotto - and DRIVING around. I came out of black outs in some very scary situations. No idea how I survived - even driving on the German autobahn, no speed limit, on black outs. Rolled a car off a cliff when I hit black ice - during a black OUT - car was totaled; I walked home! I quit drinking completely and forever in Nov. 88 - I knew that the next drunk would be my last one in one form or another. Just knew it.

I could never understand people having "a few beers." Still can't. That's why I don't touch it anymore - 24.5 years sober (and 32 years since ANY "illegal" drugs - even weed - never liked it, actually).

Lucky to be alive, I most certainly am.

Binge drinking in the 70's A Mickey of Lemon Gin, easy to stick in your boot and still get into the dance or porch climber wine, usually homemade and stolen, tee,hee.

More sophisticated in the early 80's...rye and seven..tall, (insert party howl) or double Dirty Mothers, ah Tequila, you were so not my friend, lol.
