in the same boat, paying for insurance for twenty years out of pocket so it is not the best. doctor says to wait, offer me trails i dont like. i roll through life feeling less than comfortable from cohabitating with hepc. must be hopeful that soon help will arrive. we notice many are being saved from this punishment and we continue to be hopeful

Jaro, you are tx nave & geno 1 if I remember correctly. Were you denied triple with Solvadi/IFN/riba or off-label? The off-label combo of Sol/Oly is routinely being denied due to the high cost & because it is not FDA approved for use together to tx geno 1. Generally when off-label is approved it is for those with more advanced liver disease.

My doc told me the only way my ins. would pay for newer meds was if I did older standard of care tx first. I did not want to do IFN/riba but basically was given no choice & when that failed I was able to try triple therapy with Incivek which didn't work either. The triple with Incivek was initially denied but quickly approved on appeal. When I asked for SOL/OLY my doc still said no & told me I am healthy enough to wait for an FDA approved combo coming later this year so he wouldn't go with off-label. It is beyond frustrating but I'm hopeful I will be able to get Solvadi/Ledispavir without any trouble & that my BC/BS Medicare Advantage PPO will cover the cost Been paying for insurance for over 40 yrs & they hold our fate in their hands. Geesh. Sorry your appeals have been denied. Your docs appeal letters have to explain why you are unable to take IFN based tx meds & must be backed up with your medical history.

AAL is right. They are approving the sickest OR if you have a legitimate Interferon ineligibility, or have failed on INF or Riba previously.

I see, Jaro, that were only recently dx. Do you know your liver status?

I am not diminishing your disappointment - either of you. But remember that HCV is a slow progressing disease. I have had it FORTY-SEVEN years with minimal damage to my liver.

I waited ELEVEN years from the time I was diagnosed because I am INF ineligible.

Of every 100 people infected with Hepatitis C about only 5-20 people will go on to develop cirrhosis over a period of 20-30 years and just 1-5 of that 100 people will die from cirrhosis or liver failure.

And these statistics are PRIOR to the newer treatments that have a much higher success rate!

jaro, what will Dr. G's office do now? I'm so disappointed for you, and hoping you still can get those meds. It took me over 2 months to finally get them, but I finally did - started taking them 3 days ago.
I'm treatment naive and geno 1 also. Maybe being post-transplant after liver cancer was found and am anemic helped to get me on them. I'm still praying for you, jaro. Marilyn

Start contacting Gilead. They told me nobody will go untreated. They have a special help line. Call their main number and they will get you there. Their process is basically once you have exhausted all appeals process, they will yen get you to fill out some paperwork.

Now that is for Sovaldi. I would not be surprised if the other companies have similar programs

How frustrating this all is! you read about new medicines, new breakthroughs but...... how to afford them, or try to get insurance to pay for them? I am one of the 5-20% that went to stage 4 cirrhosis. I am not sure how long I had Hep C, had official diagnosis in 2005, but could have had as long as 1984, from my husband(we were very poor and shared razors) He contracted it from blood transfusion before they tested blood for hep c, at least that is what I want to believe!? We are now separated,as he did not want to take care of sick wife. I really was naive thinking private insurance would automatically pay for latest new drugs, after all people have paid into it their whole lives, it saddens me. I can see medicaid,having to figure out how to pay for it. I thought it would happen sooner rather than later. As complications from hep c can be costly. I am sorry for your extra stress. Do I understand correctly, you only get 3 appeals? Did you go through old treatment with interferon? What a mess this is turning into, while Dr.'s all over the US are encouraging all born between certain years to get tested. What then? if many are positive. they have to live knowing there is a cure, but.....can't afford treatment,or their insurance won't pay. The morale in the USA won't be very positive if everyone has to try interferon first. Hope your insurance changes their mind.

What works for me - I've accepted I may never be hcv free. I do the best I can every day. I don't let hcv dictate my whole life, I won't let it rob me of the joy of living today.
I see my dr this morning. not expecting any thing. I may have to wait for S&L.
What difference does it make, I am compensating, I can wait.
I try not to look ahead to the worse consequences of hcv. I will enjoy today.

That's just me. I have my moments of disgust, frustration, despair & fear but I don't live there.

We'll get treatment! Have faith, we'll get our turn.

What the heck are they thinking?!! I 'm annoyed they are even still doing INF and Riba at this point from the dibilitating side effects. Hang in there, Your day will come soon, everones will. I would keep at it, wear them down.

Thanks everyone. I was told I have cirrohis and I am taking meds for portal hypertension for varices. I have had hep c for 30 years but just found out. I did an MRI of my liver and will go over results with dr. on the 30th. I know others are much worse than I am and I hope I could be as brave in their situations. I am just feeling blue but I will shake it off and look at all the positives. I am just mad at my insurance company, BC/BC. PPO.....
