I would like to know this too!
Ammonia (P) Reference Range < or = 47 umol/L
I am also dealing w/this now. Please don't take anything I say below as 'real' only just what I've experienced and kinda researched.
Before tx mine was 136
1 mo into tx was 56
no test since until last week and was very high at 163.
This is not something to be taken lightly and can be VERY serious! Need to talk w/doctor on possible underlying cause. Mine just said take the med and re-test in 2 wks. He thinks mine is temp and will clear up w/meds.
I am on tx and only Stage 1/Grade1 which is unusual for high ammonia - most w/high ammonia usually have cirrosis
All I've found so far is contact w/chemicals w/ammonia in them, sedatives, drugs, alchol but also tons of other things. I take mood stabilizers for bipolar, xanax for anxiety and ambien for sleep so it could be that. Also too much protein in your gut. Very confusing to me.
I just cleaned rental trailer w/alot of ammonia so that may be mine who knows. looked at every household cleanser - 99% have ammonia in them.
Also I never know what to eat...annemia say protein, ammonia says no protein...
Can affect brain stem and become dangerous/deadly. I've noticed very high mental confusion - much worse than normal tx brain fog. This was what prompted me to ask doc for test and also cause hadn't had one in awhile.
RN and others told me that my organs are not processing ammonia thru liver and then kidneys properly.
Also had problem w/high potassium not being processed thru kidneys. These #'s seem to vary and my potassium resolved itself within a few days by itself.
Ammonia can be reduced by taking a liquid medicine called 'Lactulose Solution USP'. This causes high ammonia in system to bind w/medicine and allow you to cleanse your system. Believe me I'm on it today 1st time and it does cleanse!
Talk to your doctor if your # is high and if you haven't had test please ask for one...I had to.
Because hadn't had one since 12-07 have no idea how long mine has been high???
I just made post myself about this subject 'High Ammonia - Help' or something like that.
Sorry if this is more info than ya wanted - probably just wanted to know where to find name - I apologize just still researching myself.
let me know what ya find out please-I'll pray that you have a normal level dear...god bless!

Not sure what each means but can look at normal range and see what mine are. Hope this helps some.
If you haven't had potassium test please ask for one of those too...very important to keep even - too high or too low is dangerous. I only found mine at annual physical. Not normal test for Hepc doc to do.
Again let me know what ya find out...xoxo
