Hepatitis C is a blood-borne viral disease which can cause liver inflammation, fibrosis, cirrhosis and liver cancer. The hepatitis C virus (HCV) is spread by blood-to-blood contact with an infected person's blood. Many people with HCV infection have no symptoms and are unaware of the need to seek treatment. Hepatitis C infects an estimated 150-200 million people worldwide.
When I was 17 I was foolish to try intravenous drugs. There was a time that I had ended up in Juvenile Hall, and was told I had A or B...But years have passed. I am now 56. I have felt fatigued for a year now. I thought it was depression. Had my blood tests run only to find out I have Hepatitis C....Oh Dear.....I am remaining hopeful. I have used Daily Strength for another of their discussion boards. I am confident that I will get the same hope, courage and strength from this board as well.

Do you know what genotype you are? That's the first thing a specialist will find out (well, one of the first things). Your genotype dictates what treatment is available for you. But one step at a time - find that specialist! There are a lot of terms that go along with this disease - so don't want to load too much on you right now. But if you have questions, please ask.
We are here to help - please stay with us. Many of us have treated already for HCV and almost all of that group (if not all) is now VIRUS FREE.... myself included! We are "real people" who have gone through the confusion, depression, anger, hope, joy and HEALING, and yes, the stigma --- all that goes with this disease. We have walked the walk and among us done a whole lot of research. We're not doctors, so you need a good one, as you know. That said, we often know more than the docs about some things - but remember to always run anything BY your doctor that we've written that is something you are interested in.

I have been going to Harvey Tatum for probably 9 years and I think a lot of him. He does trials and knows a lot about HCV. It takes a while to get an appt with him, but his Physician's Assistant, Rose is very good. I see her most of the time but he does all of the procedures so I see him once or twice a year.
You will need to find out the condition of your liver and your genotype so that you will know what treatment is available for you.

I think I got hcv eating raw monkey meat in the jungle. It could've been poor aseptic technique from a colonoscopy or surgery. Maybe it was the nail salon or using a boyfriends toothbrush. Not sure.
