Hemochromatosis Support Group
Hemochromatosis is a hereditary disease characterized by improper processing by the body of dietary iron which causes iron to accumulate in a number of body tissues, eventually causing organ dysfunction. It is the main iron overload disorder. Hemochromatosis is notorious for having symptoms that are often initially misattributed to other diseases.
Though it has quite alot of iron it should NOT be very bio-available due to other compounds in it, as is the case with spinach. Try to consume it alone so that other foods do not increase bio-availability of the iron. Also it has some other compounds that should be beneficial for health.
A couple of small studies (on patients with high iron due to thalissimia & myelodysplastic syndromes) have shown it to have a chelating effect on iron, but more need to be done.
PS. Have you seen the thread on this board about taking wheatgrass to chelate iron?
