Hemochromatosis Support Group
Hemochromatosis is a hereditary disease characterized by improper processing by the body of dietary iron which causes iron to accumulate in a number of body tissues, eventually causing organ dysfunction. It is the main iron overload disorder. Hemochromatosis is notorious for having symptoms that are often initially misattributed to other diseases.
The combination of Hemochromatosis and alcohol is bad news for your liver and other organs. Has your doctor ordered either a MRI or liver biopsy? IMO, you need one or the other to check the status of your liver. Either one, I believe, can tell if there is any damage from either the iron or alcohol.
You need to stop drinking. I had to stop drinking a glass of wine once in awhile.
Tough situation..........
I feel like a burden..they’re busy enough there.
Therefore, I drink a lot of water in the morning and eat a big lunch before going to the blood center around 12:30. The blood center that I go to have a rule that the person inserting the IV have one shot and if they miss then you are sent home. Nine donatations and they have not missed. I wish that I had the same luck all the other times.
Now, there are others that have the two gene version and their bodies soak up iron like a sponge. They use several methods to block, or at least reduce, the absorption of iron. There are several methods from drinking tea or coffee with meals to taking a calcium pill when eating a lot of meat during one meal. If you search hemochromatosis you should be able to find many resources and guidance.
Have you had a genetic blood test for hemochromatosis? If not, ask your doctor for one. Just a standard blood test and insurance has paid for mine.
Once your ferritin level drops back to normal, see how long it takes for it to go back above normal. If it takes months like mine did, don't worry about iron in food. If it jumps back up, then you will have to be careful when eating foods with iron. It is a try it and see situation. Remember that hemochromatosis is a genetic problem that you have had since your birth, your doctors just never checked before. My doctors duud the same, did not check. Once I found out how serious iron overload is I gave my current PCP hell. I think he tests forit now. Everyone needs to be checked at least once.
I know that it is confusing, but it is manageable.
I’m diagnosed as an HH hereditary hemochromatosis. I need to remember to add that when I ask questions..it helps you answer.. sorry
Dora62, can you remove the access iron and then be done with it?
I wasn't alcoholic but did over indulge & binge luckily my liver seemed OK and scan showed only mild signs of damage, despite getting pains in my liver after a big night out from around age 30. Recently I read a paper on why this might have been, saturated fat is protective! (I never cut back on saturated fat food though did follow other common dietary advice) eg

Note the bit where is says repaired (though we aren't rats)
Obviously I'm no doctor so you should discuss consuming a higher saturated fat diet with your doctor (he'll probably recoil in horror) or do your own research like I did, I've now stopped using ALL seed oils (vegetable oils) except olive & avocado on salads etc and use ghee/butter/suet for cooking. The biggest issue though is all the so called vegetable oils hidden in processed food, Check out the Fat Emperor
