Hemochromatosis is a hereditary disease characterized by improper processing by the body of dietary iron which causes iron to accumulate in a number of body tissues, eventually causing organ dysfunction. It is the main iron overload disorder. Hemochromatosis is notorious for having symptoms that are often initially misattributed to other diseases.
Hi all
Now Christmas and the new year are out of the way its time to think of holiday's.
Has any one with HH mentioned this to their ravel insurance company, and if so what was the result.
We are going to Cuba in April, and I am not sure if mentioning HH will give me a problem getting travel insurance or if I dont and I need it even for non medical reasons if the insurer may recind my cover.
I am going to ask my Heamatologist this month if I should mention this to my travel insurer, as I am not sure if this is a good idea.
Any thought or experiences on this anyone?

The policy agreement with insurers usually stipulates that the policy-holder must disclose any know health condition to the insurer. Check your policy wording and if this is the case and you want to remain protected by your insurer you must disclose your HH diagnosis. If you don't and your insurer finds out, you will not be covered.
When I joined the Haemochromatosis Society UK I received good information from them about insurance for people with HH and there were some names of insurance companies that will insure people with an HH diagnosis without charging an exorbitant amount (most charge a lot more, even though there is not likely to be a medical problem during a holiday).

I live in BC and went to Europe last spring. I was up front with the insurance agent with having HH. Her reaction was, I have lots of clients that have this. It is not a problem. This was mentioned in the application also. As far as I could tell, my insurance rate did not go up as a result.

Well I was suprisd... I contacted my travel insurer, I get it free via my Natwest bank account, and I explained the situation.
They asked if I am on any medication, so I said no, as I am not they then said that they were happy with insuring me and would not be asking for an excess payment.

That was a good result! I realised about the insurance issue just after I was diagnosed and was coming to terms with the lifelong treatment issue and the insurance issue felt like another blow at the time. I had always wanted to buy a camper van when I retired and travel around Europe and other places wondered how I would now be able to do this as the European health card is for emergency treatment. I still have to tell my insurer - since the treatment started in September I have been occupied with finding ways of managing it and the insurance issue slipped my mind.
