Hemochromatosis is a hereditary disease characterized by improper processing by the body of dietary iron which causes iron to accumulate in a number of body tissues, eventually causing organ dysfunction. It is the main iron overload disorder. Hemochromatosis is notorious for having symptoms that are often initially misattributed to other diseases.

Hey, I am wondering about the use of magnetic therapy, often used in arthritis treatment, would be a good idea for people with arthritis caused by iron deposition in the joints....any thoughts?

Hey cowgirl, no specific thoughts, but I do love this question. I love when people think outside the box. I did see a man healing after surgery to his neck. he was weaing a huge magnet around his neck. He was in the radiology lab and he explained the he had to wear the magnet for 16 hours to ecourage rapid bone healing. I suppose redirecting iron could be possible one day, if not today. suzq..

Hi cowgirl,

I'd be curious about this, too. I had wondered if we were to s-l-o-w-l-y move a large magnet over our skin, from liver toward the left lower ribs and then down-following the intestine, if it would attract any iron?. Yeah, I know.... it was a stupid thought but, remember, I was looking for ANYTHING that might get my iron out due to the extreme high ferritin:) That plus I knew it wouldn't do what I needed, ie.. phlebotomy therapy/treatments.

There are LOTS of videos on youtube showing how magnets attract iron from mushy cereal. Here is one of those links and "our own" fructmals was one of those who made a comment:)

Oh, I know magnets don't actually pull iron in the body the way that some might think...I just have heard of people using magnets in arthritis to help with the inflammation and everything....I didn't know if anyone with the specific type of arthritis that is caused by hemochromatosis, or if there is any contraindications to using them.

I saw somewhere that you should not have a MRI scan with a full stomach of cereal. Can you imagine what those tiny iron fragments would do to your insides if heated. I have wondered if MRI scans could be dangerous at the nano particle level for patients with HH. Anyone seen any info? suzq.

I know if they use contrast medium for the MRI that it may contain iron. "Only if you've had iron injections recently" & they assured me it would not affect me, 2 different techs, BUT my ferritin shot up and my hemo was FURIOUS because the type used should not be used for us (I forget the name). Needless to say, I won't allow contrast to be used again!

That was at a time when my ferritn had already started to go crazy & start climbing!
