Hemochromatosis is a hereditary disease characterized by improper processing by the body of dietary iron which causes iron to accumulate in a number of body tissues, eventually causing organ dysfunction. It is the main iron overload disorder. Hemochromatosis is notorious for having symptoms that are often initially misattributed to other diseases.

CLIFF'S NOTES---> Hemochromatosis and knee problems (chondromalacia) with NO sign of CPDD (calcium crystals common to HH)... Any relation???
BACKGROUND---> My knee pain was my first cause for concern a few years back and eventually led to my diagnosis of Hemochromatosis. I was told in 2006 that my knee may have osteoarthritis. After more joints became involved I was tested for RA and when my Rheumatoid factor came back negative, that is when HH was discovered...
Okay then. My knee has gotten progressively worse. I went back to a joint specialist and he reversed his old opinion and diagnosed me with CHONDROMALACIA or "runner's knee."
He said that it is probably a coincidence that I have hemochromatosis.
PROBLEM---> I'm not a runner. I did walk quite a bit when the knee pain started. About 2 miles per day. Now I don't walk for exercise- It hurts!
QUESTION---> Does anyone else have joint problems and if so is your knee(s) involved? It really hurts and I'd like to know if iron overload caused this. I have read that hemosiderin can be present in chondromalacia.

I now have a new lease on life and am able to walk short distances with only mild pain. I am so thankful for his advice and would just like to share it. I don't know if it will help others, but I'd like to broadcast it since Vioxx, Celebrex, Motrin and pain medications were so ineffective. I don't think CPDD gets enough recogintion as a culprit with HH and arthritis.
