Hemochromatosis Support Group
Hemochromatosis is a hereditary disease characterized by improper processing by the body of dietary iron which causes iron to accumulate in a number of body tissues, eventually causing organ dysfunction. It is the main iron overload disorder. Hemochromatosis is notorious for having symptoms that are often initially misattributed to other diseases.
My hematocrit dropped after my first few phlebs. Then, it started going up. My last phleb last Wednesday it started going down again. The phlebotomist told me this is how they know the phlebs are working.
I was just diagnosed in August, it is still very confusing and frightening to me.

Sorry but these two numbers have me confused and the blood bank I have been going to is leading me to believe my hematocrit level has gone up and has advised it is probably due to eating too much iron.
I would love to get the right info on these two numbers. I have looked everywhere and just don't get it.
I see my doctor on the 17th. I have a list of questions for her and this is one. Explain the difference between ferritin and hematocrit.
Hope this is of some help.
Thanks for the response. Good to know I am not the only one confused by the different readings.
I go to the doc tomorrow and I too have many questions for him.
It is the first time back since I started giving blood. I am eager to see where my ferritin levels have gone. Will see tomorrow!
