Hemochromatosis Support Group
Hemochromatosis is a hereditary disease characterized by improper processing by the body of dietary iron which causes iron to accumulate in a number of body tissues, eventually causing organ dysfunction. It is the main iron overload disorder. Hemochromatosis is notorious for having symptoms that are often initially misattributed to other diseases.
Mike.
I recently did some research on protein powders as I wanted to lose some weight. I found that most of them exceeded the RDA for iron if you take more than one per day so I won't take them as I have HH. I don't even want to take one per day as there is iron in the other food that we eat.
I asked the "doctors" that work for some of these products to confirm that their product did not exceed the RDA for iron and they said not.
However, the RDA for iron is different for men and women at different ages - and not one "doctor" asked me my age and they all quoted only a standard RDA which exceeded all but one age group. They seem to think that consuming excess iron is a good thing.
For babies and children of both genders up to 13 years old and for men and women over 51 years the RDAs are the same (birth to 6 mths / 0.27 mg; 7-12 mths / 11 mg; 1-3 years / 7 mg; 4-8 years / 10 mg; 9-13 years / 8 mg; 51+ years / 8 mg).
For age group 14-18 years the RDA for males is 11 mg and for females it is 15 mg. For age group 19-50 years the RDA for males is 8 mg and for females it is 18 mg. The RDAs for pregnant and lactating females are different as well for these two age ranges.
There is also a "tolerable upper intake level" (for me it is 45 mg) although I would not wish to test this as it would mean more phlebotomies / venesections to get rid of it after consuming it.
Breakfast cereals and bread are usually fortified with iron - it is hard to find any that are not. I have found only one type of bread locally that is not fortified and I eat only porridge oats now. Again, I don't want to have any more venesections that I have to so as to get rid of iron accumulated from eating fortified products.
It does take a bit of effort to work all of these things out but at least these days we have the internet so it is easier to find information.
