Hmmmmmm, I'll be curious to see what others think about those numbers! I don't have a clue but I agree, something seems to be off.

Your 5yr olds iron level does stick out a bit but I wouldn't worry too much about it at this stage, it's still way too low to cause any damage. Also Ferritin and % sat can bounce around quite a lot as you probably know. Given his Ferritin level it may even be an error. Though if you have reduced iron consumption for the whole family recently that may explain the high iron low ferritin.

It may just be a result of eating differently now or in the past, e.g. 5yr old always has a particular fortified cereal with an orange juice where as 7yr old does not. (Didn't one baby formula recently add iron to their? could that be it?)

Still you should probably have him retested in a year or two, just in case and to put your mind at rest.

I didn't reduce iron for anyone other than myself. My husband is only a carrier for the H63D gene and i am homo for C282Y so my middle kid could have both but, still, classic hh isn't supposed to affect people until closer to adulthood. My real concern was whether he had the juvenile HH which is a mutation on a completely different chromosome. It is still autorecessive so my husband and I would have to be carriers. I understand it is pretty rare but that would be my primary concern since it affects and kills children before they are even adults.

As you say, it's very very unlikely he has Juvenile HH so you can probably stop worrying about this. But given your & your husbands status probability says you will probably have at least one child with compound HH as each has a 50% chance, as I'm sure you already know.

His iron is high, though I wonder if it's possible just a hangover from birth as (ALL) newborns can have Ferritin levels up to 600 and saturation of 100% (HH mothers may give there kids extra? Though one study suggested they did not). According to the Iron Inst. book on Hemochromatosis, even if infants are homozygous (2 copies of HH gene) they are not in danger of iron overload at these levels, (your son is not an infant of course). I've not been able to find anything to give an indication of how fast iron levels etc in young children should fall let alone in kids with HH (should probably be normal within a year or maybe two, I beleive). But perhaps he will take longer if he has HH. Perhaps by the time he is 7yrs old he will have similar levels as your 7yr old. If he is compound HH then maybe his levels will fall slower.

His % sat may have been affected by food, as we HH's do not normally fast before tests (but we should to get a truly accurate level) as it's normally done frequently the series of results will give a good idea.

You don't need to worry about damage being done as even his higher levels are not high enough to cause damage. But you should have him tested in a year or two. In my opinion. But obviously you should talk to his doctor

BTW. He's cute ...... but then I would say that as he looks just like my son. ha! ha!
