Hemochromatosis Support Group
Hemochromatosis is a hereditary disease characterized by improper processing by the body of dietary iron which causes iron to accumulate in a number of body tissues, eventually causing organ dysfunction. It is the main iron overload disorder. Hemochromatosis is notorious for having symptoms that are often initially misattributed to other diseases.
Ok, so my labs came back as such:
Ferritin = 40
Iron = 157
Sat % = 64%
ALT = 16
Alkaline phosphate = 70
Does anyone know why my alkaline phosphate test is rising. it has gone from 43 in July to 70 now. I realize this is stil within normal rnage but has anyone also had this experience? My ALT remains consistent. Also, since my ferritin is at 40, is it safe to continue to phleb to get my iron and sat% down?

Alkaline phosphate can rise by taking antibiotics and also the contraceptive pill not just liver issues. Keep an eye on it. X

i don't take antibiotics and I have come off the pill recently. I messaged my doc. Will see what she says.

I surely will. Do you know anything about how much more they will phleb since my ferritin is already at 40. I do need to get my iron down and my sat % down. Will the ferritin drop slow down?

I am not a medical doctor but have been told that 50 for ferritin is ideal...so you probably can take an break from the phlebotomies for a while. I went somewhat below 50 and then had to contend with fatigue from a slight anemia. My doctor's plan is to give me a phleb break and then test me in a month or so from now...and give a phleb then if needed. I am praying that my iron hasn't spiked because at least when I was diagnosed I was a fast loader at 84%...You should probably check with your doctor before having more phlebotomies...Take good care.

I think it really depends on how you feel. Some people here feel better at about 20 , it all depends on the individual. Are you feeling ok at 40?. You could be a fast loader if your sats are still high. Im still at 700 at last check but sats level is low at 35%. We are all different. X

Yeah, will have to focus on how I feel. Not sure where I feel best yet. I don't think I felt bad from it to begin with. I caught it early and by chance. We will c. ended up doing the phlebotomy yesterday so i will find out how much my ferritin has dropped next month. I seem to feel fine, I think. Tired but that is because I don't get enough sleep.
