Hemochromatosis Support Group
Hemochromatosis is a hereditary disease characterized by improper processing by the body of dietary iron which causes iron to accumulate in a number of body tissues, eventually causing organ dysfunction. It is the main iron overload disorder. Hemochromatosis is notorious for having symptoms that are often initially misattributed to other diseases.
Yes last year before diagnosis I noticed a considerable amount of hair loss as did my hair dresser. When I went for tests yesterday I also squeezed in a hair cut and color, my hair dresser said she saw a major amount of new growth and showed me with another mirror. Definitely related to HH in my opinion, I am now starting maintenance and my levels are normal so it makes sense that the new hair now has a chance to take. Interesting isn't it? She even noticed one side of my head the hair was thinner. One other thing she noticed with out her knowing I was ill with this disorder was that my hair would crunch when she cut it, I then told her about my HH and she made a good point in the fact that the iron is being deposited through the hair as well as the organs and tissues, makes sense to me. Hope this helps and have a great day:-)
Thats funny Iron maiden the last time I went to the hairdresser she told me I had one side that was thinner then the other, I never thought of it being due to HH I have noticed that the last few months my hair has been extrememly greasy looking ..when I wash it the next day it looks like I haven't washed it in a week its driving me nuts I never had this problem.. geez what else does this disease affect..
I often wonder what else this disorder causes and I tend to blame everything thats ever happened to me, on it. I have noticed over the past few years a deterioration in my eyesight. Not your normal aging thing ...this is rapid. I've been chalking it up to too much computer use and I guess it can very well be that ...in any event I am getting looked at as I've always had bang on vision. There has been some discussion on a relation to cataracts with HH as well.
and I think the magnet thing is true it has to be I have witnesses..LOL we went on vacation a few years ago and everytime I had the key in my front pocket we had to walk to the front desk and get it reactivated apparently I demagnetized it and it never worked after I held it..LOL to say the least I am not allowed to hold a room key ever again *sigh*
Hair loss
Vision
Magnetized
I can relate to all of them but I agree with Sandy on the sleeping hair loss issue and now the vision loss in my case like normal people that reach thier 40s started slowly after having perfect vision all my life ,eye doc sent me to k-mart for readers but about a year later it did get worse to a point now that I have to have one strength to read then a strongest strength to thread a needle to sew , so I totally and strongly agree with Ironmaiden1 on that one because it scared me in the beginning because of the rapid rate that I lost it in ,and now for the magnet issue ,Meechie this is all new to me to hear about because everytime I get in or out of my car or truck I get zapped ,never fails, and also we have a thin strip of material that runs through the middle of the wooden edge of our kitchen countertops that zaps me just walking past it sometimes without even coming in contact with it ,I keep an aquarium set up on the end of the counter for this reason just to add moisture to the air .
However, I've recently developed some bald spots. Not sure if it is HH related or not. I do have a skin condition on my scalp..I wonder if that was brought on by the HH. Hmm.
And about the eyes..I have noticed my eyes have gotten worse in the last two yrs. When I went to the eye doc 2 yrs ago,,I asked him if HH can affect your eyesight, because mine went pretty fast,,he said "not that I know of". I went home and done some research. I read, and I cant for the life of me remember where,,that HH can cause Macular degeneration.
It is a matter of eating healthy food.
