what is the best cough and cold medicine

woke up with congsestion in my lungs and coughing up thick green sputum and feel like my tongue is large.I need some over the counter medication .What do you all suggest?

HI

For the phem - i would recommend quafinessen - in some form of Mucinex.

To stop creating the phlem - I would recommend getting a good nose spray from the pharmacist or contacting your cardiologist or pulminary doctor.

With that much phlem you should probably see a doctor - not sure which one.

Now that my heart is weak and I have COPD and bronchitis - I wind up in the ER or hospital every time I get a cold.

Did you get the flu shot and the pnemonia shot???

Thanks DR. Raoulby ,I will give my MD a call in the am and see if they can get me something to help.I just wanted something for tonight and will get some Mucinex from walgreens

Well doc you were right had to go have chest xray today fluid backing up into my lungs. She also said I have a sinus infection.and acute bronchitis.This heart failure is hard because the primary doctor told me to push fluids because of the phlem and I know I am on 1500 cc fluid restriction.OH well waiting for doxycycline to kick in hope it does soon.My grandpa says what doesn't kill you will make you stronger I hope he was right

Wow ! I am sorry you are having so much difficulty. WHich doctor is prescribing for you the cardiologist or the pulminary doctor? You need to speak to the pulminary doctor and get his/her input on this since you have the PH (pulminary hypertension); at least I think you do . You probably need to be on a nebulizer for this situation; or in the hospital. Thsi is serious - you may have a harder time with this than you realise. I was hospitalized so many times in the first few years for the bronchitis. Finally one of the hospitals gave me a nebulizer to use to cut down on my 911 rides and hospitalizations. Ask your pulminary doctor for help getting a nebulizer for the house. I know this sounds silly - but - you are in a battle now because the pulminary and the heart problems are combining to beat you up. And I totally appologize for being such a worry wort.

Please understand the pulminary problem can escalate rapidly into a life threatening situation. If you do not get adequate help for your doctors and get the equipment that you need - do not hesitate to go to the hospital to get the help.

Also ask your pulminary doctor to define the red line symptoms you need to watch for so that you will know (early) when you need to go to the hospital.

Dear Raoul, Been doing a lot of thinking and filled out a online applcation to go see a pulmonary hypertension specialist at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville so hopefully they will call within the next 48 hours with an appiontment time.Thanks for all the great information and support. Jami
