Heart Failure Support Group
Heart failure is a condition that can result from any structural or functional cardiac disorder that impairs the ability of the heart to fill with or pump a sufficient amount of blood throughout the body. It is often undiagnosed due to a lack of a universally agreed definition and difficulties in diagnosis, particularly when the condition is considered "mild."
On the smoking, I quit two years ago on Feb. 19. I had been smoking about seven a day for the past ten months because I was so concerned about the shortness of breath issue. I had been smoking for 46 years, most of those about a pack a day. When I was diagnosed with heart failure and COPD, I knew I had to quit. The final thing was I was scheduled for a nuclear stress test and was told I couldn't smoke for 24 hours beforehand. I figured if I could go 24 hours without smoking, I was on my way. So for the few days before the stress test, I gradually cut back one a day until the last day. I had been going to save my final cigarette for the evening but couldn't make it. Yes, I still miss smoking. But I know not smoking helps to keep me alive, which I want very much. Not smoking is as important as taking my pills, doing my daily 30-minute walk, and seeing all my doctors on schedule.
Hang in there. You can do this and it will make a difference. Think of the money saved, not to mention no coughing and no going outside to smoke in all kinds of weather.
Yes, i'm thinking back, and although he didn't have any info except he said "It looks like you had a heart attack".....i don't know if it was one, or how it happened?
I know before my hospital stay i was swollen up so badly, totally exhausted and short of breath, so who knows when it was.
I'm wondering if they did an EKG in the hospital, why they didn't say anything to me?
Could it be i've had a heart attack since i've been home? All my heart rates were good, i haven't been as out of breath as i used to be, and i've been on oxygen 24/7. Only had 3 cigs today...im' getting there, and soon!!!
