Heart Attack Support Group
Heart attack is a serious, sudden heart condition usually characterized by varying degrees of chest pain or discomfort, weakness, sweating, nausea, vomiting, and arrhythmias, sometimes causing loss of consciousness. It occurs when the blood supply to a part of the heart is interrupted, causing death and scarring of the local heart tissue.
Stress tests are standard in Cardiac Clinic. They are carried out by qualified medics and overseen by Doctors. I understand your partners concerns but this stress test is a preventative measure and could well detect any underlying heart issue. This is an absolute must in your case and I urge you to think of what could happen if any heart problem goes untreated. We here are all testament to this here on Daily Strength and indeed, the reason why you've sought us out.
Yes, the stress test is safe. Yes, the stress test is worth it. The decision you make, however, is yours.
Good luck with what ever you decide

Its called a nucular stress test and you should have it done its not hard it only last about 20 min i have one every year. If you have something wrong this will detect it better to find it before you have a heart attack that way you dont have to worry about any heart damage.good luck and its nothing

Well I will continue a little bit further just to give you a different, but not indicating that Alli and Johnny are inaccurate. Yes, any stress test with a suspected cardiac condition is aboslutely dangerous. But let's define dangerous. It has a myriad of conotaions.
Dangerous? From the perspective, like, "Are your balls gonna fall off given the toxicity of the radioactive Dye? ABSOLUTELY NOT. Is it dangerous to be around others when you come back glowing like the "Return of Christ" to a mini geiger counter? Yes !Pehaps to someone who is pregnant.
Dangerous? Is there a possibility that you will suffer a Heart Attack during this test. Absolutely yes! But there are a team of cardiac specialists and a cardiac cath lab and surgery prepared that are fully staffed to deal with that contingency.
The whole point of a stress test is to press your heart above normal limits to see how it reacts. The nuclear imaging gives them a better picture of your vascular system and blood flow characteristics then a plain EKG hooked up while you are doing a 6 minute fast paced walk.
Dangerous? That they may not find something that can raise it's ugly head days, weeks after the test because of unknowm tangibles not present during the stress test? Absolutely. Inflammattion and anxiety may not be present at the time of your stress test which can be present in serious event later down the line. Even days later.
But here is the most important question. Is it Dangerous if I don't have it done now? ABSOLUTELY AFFIRMATIVE. Not knowing that there may be something lingering can be catostrophic very soon down the line. Catching it now even if there are complications is more prudent and life preserving then an unwitnessed Heart Attack on the street, at home or in your sleep.
So I just thought I would add a different slant for you to get "Freaked out Over. LOL.
These are just a few other things to ponder so you can make an informed decision and maybe even calm the "Significant Other" so she doesn't have a Heart Attack. LOL
My best Reagrads and Prayers,
Just joe
The first time I ever had a stress test I didn't really know what it was about? Heck I am glad I didnt' know anything....I'm chicken lol
OK the first one during the part they use cemicals on me not the trade mill thing.....I remember the voices of the women doing this going away further and further....like I was passing out kind of.
Well they thru me in the hospital did a angogram.....yup they did/ guess what they didn't find the problem? who knows?
I had a stint they thought the unthinkable by their standars.....that the stint would fail....but that is what they thought.....
But they told me the stint was doing its job and they didnt' or couldn't find any problems....
just I didn't pass the stress test. Go fig?
so take it easy do what your told and relax....hope they have a tv or music and more then just magizens....
I had a lunch with me too.
It was interesting.....so far I haven't had one for over a year.
I don't like them. But they are part of the care.
Steve
Yes, a stress test can be dangerous. Like Joe said, if a cardiac condition is present, it can be dangerous. I don't want to scare you, a stress test wouldn't be indicated unless there were symptoms to indicate the need, but I don't want to say that they are harmless either.
Minor7th's mother (my spouse) was feeling poorly on a trip back from Europe. Standard stuff like backache and headache that wouldn't go away, she had nausea also. The nausea was bad enough that she had a hard time eating. She had previously had a doctor appointment scheduled for four days after her return. Even though she was very sick, she waited for her doctor appointment. She noticed that she had gained 7 pounds in the time since her return. In her visit to her PCP she gave her doctor her symptoms. He put her on a treadmill in the office and she had a heart attack in the doctor's office and was lifeflighted to a larger hospital where she subsequently passed away in the ICU.
So yes, they are dangerous but they are useful in detecting problems also. Having this done at the Cardiologists office might be a better idea than at your regular doctor because they are more prepared and equipped to handle any problems that might arise.
Namaste,
