I would be comfortable allowing the NP to do the procedure. BUT, I'm not you. If you're not comfortable...hold out for the gyno. There is no right or wrong answer. It's your body, do what feels right.

I should add that I've never had an IUD, but I don't see a gyno at all. I'm comfortable with my PCP doing my yearly exams... I know him and trust him with all my medical care. If he sends me to someone else I know it's because the "problem" is best addressed by a specialist and not because either of us are uncomfortable.

If I were going to do that again I think I'd definitely want it to be a qualified doctor - it's not exactly the most comfortable procedure to go through, I'd want to be quite sure there was a minimum of poking about.

The np that is with my group of gynos has been there for years and is almost as good as the dr's themselves. I have gone to my np for many things I have also waited to see the dr when it was something i didn't feel comfortable withe the np doing....It has to be your choice, see what feels right. If you are comfortable with the np, I'm sure she has put them in often enough. Do what you feel is best, but remember no nookie until you have the iud in this might make your decision easier lol!

A np knows what shes doing. When I was pregnant with my last child I only saw the NP for my first hand full of appts. I really like her a lot and she was JUST as knowlegable as the other doctors. But I eventually had to start seeing the about gyno because the NP cant deliver babies. I really wouldnt worry about it. If she wasnt experienced in doing this pprecedure that wouldnt have her doing it.

personally, I would allow the NP to do it.

Through all 3 of my pregnancies, I had a mid-wife. until the pregnancies progressed to "high risk" she was involved in every part of it. Even then, she gave me the last ultrasound with my first baby...

there have been times when seeing a NP, that the care is more individualized then with a busy doctor.

My sister-in-law is an np...took 7 years of education and a wicked exam to become licensed. Her emphasis, or expertise, is cardio not gyno, but my thoughts are that the difference in title does not at all mean an np won't have appropriate knowledge or experience. More info for you to decide might help, such as how long has the np had her license, how much experience with this procedure has she had, even what's her record (complaints, complications). Lol I'm realizing I'm being completely sexist, assuming gender due to job title. At any rate, as others have encouraged here, in the end it's your body, your comfort level is all that matters. If the least bit dubious, hold out for the doc.
