Maybe there's a compromise? A house in the country with acreage but without it being a working farm?
Back in the 90s I bought a 25 acre plot in the country and intended to build there. Never quite worked out and I ended up selling it, but I did enjoy the tranquility of spending a Saturday mowing the front fields with my Ford 8N tractor.

What he really needs is frequent and consistent time away from work and family to rest and regroup. If you have the money, buy a small piece of land and build a cabin where he can go and hang out in the country every couple of weeks. Once the kids get older, they will be able to join you as well.
I would be against moving to the farm also, even though i love the idea. You have a FT job of raising the kids, it is unfair to expect you to be a farmer too so he can come home and enjoy his imagined escape.
I just dont think it is going to work. However, he definitely needs time away like 2 days a month or whatever to be alone and just decompress and so do you!

Try it the other way.....
"Hi Husband, I want to give up everything we currently have, move into a 900 square foot condo in the city, get rid of the vehicles and only take public transat. You need to stay home now with the kids while I put in 15 hour days okay? This is what I need to do to be happy."
Attmpting to instigate an complete lifestyle change to supponrt ONE individuals needs (which really - are INSANE) is a recipe for disaster. You'll resent him, he won't be able to wear overalls and be a farmer like he thinks, may put the lack of success on your failure to jump into this head first and...well....herd sheep.
I'm sorry you're facing this. It's really not a realistic request on his part.
Anyway.....you need to talk to him, and see what he is envisioning and what your role in that would be. but clearly he is burnt out and unhappy.
To that end, I just wanted to state that up until recently, I held a very prominent position in a male dominated industry. I worked no less than 14 - 16 hours a day and my wages were nearly what my Husband was bringing home. What we have collectively, we have built together and it is not because I sat around at home raising the kids, eating bon bons. Regardless of the time I spent at work, I was responsible for the care of our home, the dogs, I still cooked, cleaned, shopped, etc. I understand being burned out and I understand being unhappy. What I was having difficulty with was opening the lines of communication beyond where they existed. So many of you really helped me with that. Replies 1 - 6, thank you!!! :)
