No relationship is perfect. A long-term relationship requires constant effort to understand each other, fix misunderstandings, solve problems and continue to grow as both individuals change and evolve. How we deal with our misunderstandings is the focus of this community. Join us to find support, get advice, and share your experience with your relationship.
"sharing your experiences with trust issues, intimacy etc..?"
Thats pretty small parameters for a really big subject. Are you in a relationship with someone who was abused? I could help give you some positive ways to be supportive. I was in counseling for many years and in a support group. I have dealt with my issues and don't mind talking about it.
briefly:
I was raped when I was 7 by an old man in a hotel while my family was on holiday with my parents. I was later raped at 17 and had to terminate a pregnancy from that. I am sure if I had dealt with the first abuse the second may not have happened.
I am working through it and on the waiting list for a new therapist.
This has lead to me being co-Dependent and have issues of huge low-self esteem and feeling of I am only useful for sex. Fear of abandonment...I also have PTSD and Acute Anxiety Disorderthats a lot of labels but thats where I am at.
It has affected my whole life with the choices I have made, not usually the best ones for me, but always the best ones for them!
If I can help you I am happy to share. I am 46 so have been through a lot.
It took a ton of therapy over a long time to get to what I would called relatively okay with men and could be healthier in relationships too. I have more issues now with random men due to triggers and whatnot, than I have with someone I am actually with. I can be healthy with a man in a relationship now.
Traditional therapy only scratched the surface for me and that's the route I went for a long time until I tried EMDR therapy and it has been my saving grace. What happened to me will forever haunt me in its own way, but it doesn't own me like it used to and for the first time in my life I can honestly say that.
I hope you are able to find your own way, your own path to deal with what happened to you. For if you don't, it will surely creep into all of your relationships in its own way.
