Good for you! I owe about $4 grand on credit card. As soon as I pay my income tax, I'm nipping that in the bud, $1,000 a month.

I did mine right away. Already got my refund as well. I'm an accountant so I figured do my first or mine would be the last to get done!

oh in the uk ours had to be in for 31 jan and all systems went down, so lots couldnt file on line yay...... so we got an extension, all mine is now sorted...

but bang up to date with 2007.2008 so bring it on as our tax rules have now changed and it will be october rather than january deadline...

Any folks for abolishing the IRS and having a flat tax or fair tax, like me?

No way. That would kill the lower and middle class. If you do away with Fed tax, then you can't offer tax relief to those who can't afford to live and pay tax. Then the fat cats who make billions would essentially pay the same as a single mother on welfare... obviously the rich would pay a little more because they can afford to buy more stuff... but its still radically disproportionate. If I had to pay 30% sales tax on the few things I buy (groceries, gas and clothes are about the extent of my regular spending, no frills lifestyle here)... I would literally not be able to feed and clothe my kids. I count on the fact that, in our income bracket, we don't get screwed just because we decide to purchase things at the market. My husband works 6 days a week with an hour commute each way so that I can stay home and raise our children. We live in a very modest apartment, have now minimal debt for only about another 8-12 months, and are very careful with our lifestyle to not incure undue expenses. We are perfectly content in our modesty and consider ourselves rich to be among the moderately poor in this nation. We are blessed to not have to take advantage of any social services money (welfare, etc)... and to be able to have me doing my job raising the kids and tending the home. The expense it would cost for someone else to take care of our kids so that I could work to try to make up the difference in the taxes you suggest would be rediculous. I don't even know if my income potential at the moment would allow us to break even with child care, much less make up the difference in taxes. At least not until I finish my degree.... I CHOOSE to be a homemaker, and the only person it costs is my husbands sweat... my kids are better off for it, and I think society at large benefits from stay at home moms.

What you suggest would keep more money in the pockets of the rich, and literally destroy the survivability of the lower income family.

Haven't even looked at my paperwork yet...I usually put off doing my taxes every year and wait until the last minute. Maybe this year I'll try something different and file them early!

akijedi: Yes, but you'd be getting a 20-25% raise, because you'd no longer be paying income tax! So you'd in effect have money for those niceties.

And food would not, from what I'm hearing politicians say, be taxed under a fair-tax system. But clothes, yes.

akijedi: I'm trying to understand your notion that getting your whole paycheck is worse than getting "tax relief". If you don't pay income tax IN THE FIRST PLACE, isn't that more money?
