In my opinion near the end means....
You view the person like a stranger.
The thought of them with someone else doesn't bother you.
Seeing them everyday would t be like seeing any random person.
I ended my marriage almost 5 years ago, and I do not, and cannot view my ex husband/father of my son as a stranger. Seeing him is not like seeing a random person....being 35 and knowing him since I was 18 makes it quite unlikely I can ever see him as a random stranger. As far as seeing him someone else, yes, that doesn't bother me. He is remarried, and I'm just sincerely glad she has her act together and is a stable partner, since she is around my son sometimes.
Even if I was one week out of my break up, while I admit my emotions were stronger than and I have, now, become indifferent, I know it was over as over could be, but it would have still affected me. My 12 years of being with him is what made it affect me.
If people felt the way you describe, and they were only "near" the end but NOT full-fledged done, I would question how genuine the feelings had been to begin with.
Sorry..I know how hard this is.
I realize it's impossible to view an ex as "A stranger"
But if there is strong emotion. It's not over. Which doesn't mean people can't break up or divorce at that stage. We are free to do anything we want.
I know this lady who was SO angry she couldn't stand to be in the same room with her ex husband for years!! That would suck.
I would rather not break up until I was in a stage of indifference and could feel at peace with my decision. obviously lots of people don't get that. If you're the one dumped you're not going to have it, right?
anywho... I still think if you hate the though of them being with someone else you should look for other options.
have you talked to your GF? Maybe she's feeling the same way but has similar reasons for not...maybe if you both lay out on the table you're real feelings, you can agree how to transition to a professional relationship only...it can be done
Thank you for the sympathetic ear. I know its the end cos she is sick and tired of fighting and so am I. I reckon for our professional relationship to work it would be better to wait it for her to do the dumping as I know it will affect her adversely if I were the one to do it instead. I do not want to hurt her ego.
@panther99 I know exactly what you mean by feeling like a doormat. She keeps claiming that I don't understand her and there is a long laundry list of things she does not like about me which I have tried my best to change. While I understand in relationships there should be compromises I feel that the more I have changed the more I feel that I am not the person she fell in love with. Also she keeps getting angry at me for no apparent reason and when I ask her why, she says she already told me but I sincerely have no recollection. She gets angry whenever I tell her to be specific about what I do not understand about her. I feel that this major communication breakdown is the key to the downfall of our relationship.
