Through a church organization we met a lone 40-year old quadriplegic-- Mark--who lives with his 92 year old stroke victim grandmother who adopted him when he was seven. They live in an apartment and have no one but each other. We would bring ice cream, meals and stuff to visit them once a week. There is another couple involved who have provided much care and help for them over the past ten years. They are not intimately involved, but have been a great deal of support. A few months after meeting Mark and Gma, their home care aide set the kitchen on fire leaving the two of them in the apartment. They ended up in the hospital for the weekend to recover from smoke inhalation. The apartment was not livable and the super was giving them a real hard time about giving another. They were going to be placed in a nursing home---a horrible one---when my husband and I offered for them to stay with us until an apartment was available--supposedly a couple of weeks. So, he, his G'mom and his aide from Ghana--plus visiting nurses every Mon/Wed/Fri and aides T/Th. They were with us for 2 months. He was appreciative, congenial and warm. He became part of our family. He moved back into his apartment--within 2 weeks was in septic shock - back into the hospital for 2 months (actually 3 hospitals in two mos)...we thought he was going to die. In the meantime, the other couple, myself and my 25 year old daughter kept company for him daily. I became his health proxy and we invested much time in him. The problem---from the conversations I have had with him about my daughter I could see he was becoming very attached her. She is married less than a year and her husband is temporarily working in Atlanta coming home on weekends. She was spending much time with Mark via Skype, txt and phone calls. When I brought it to her attention that he was becoming too attached to her in a more intimate way - she backed off. His feelings for her were still evident to me...it was disturbing to watch and listen to them together. I hate to say it, but I feel my daughter kinda liked the attention. ANYWAY---for the past month my daughter has drawn distant from me and we have been experiencing tension. My husband and I finally decided that I should just mention to him my observation. He became livid with me. He told me my daughter was no 14 year old and it was no business of mine. That was when I lost it --14, 40 or 50---she is my daughter. He told me to get out of his apartment. I have no idea what he says to her, but the tension between us is strong. It was our intention to only give him love, a family and support so he could improve his quality of life. My daughter said some horrible things to me--told me I built Mark up only to tear out his heart...I am always too emotional...I blow things out of proportion...I am evil like my mother and her relationship with me has deteriorated to something like her husband's relationship with his alcoholic father. She has said nothing to her husband about what occurred last week. I have been distant and at a quandary as to how to proceed.Sorry this is so long.
