I stay close to Mom and sister by phone, probably 3-4/month.
When I was married we rarely saw his parents.. They moved to the south and we live in the northeast. I tried talking to her on the phone, but it was very hard to have a conversation. She would rather listen to dead air then to initiate anything.. I was able to have conversations with father in law much easier.
I would try to get ex to call them every Sunday, but he didn't like talking to them. I finally stopped asking him to call, yet when we got divorced he told them I wouldn't let him call. He's a delusional jerk though.
We always had holidays with my family, but if his parents were in town, we would go to in laws family too. We were all within an hours driving distance or less so it was no big deal to have dinner with one and dessert with another. A few times we did go down south for a holiday, but that was so painful for me because it was so difficult to talk to her, and I don't usually have problems talking to people I know.
I knew her for 26 years and each time I saw her or every conversation was as if we never met.. I suppose that's where ex got his bizarreness from..
Both my in-laws are deceased but when they were here, usually once a week they'd stop over our house or we'd go there for dinner, sometimes more.
We all got together on holidays with the whole family, still do with my mom, my sister, his sister, our boys, their girlfriends, nieces, nephews, etc., etc.
Stbxh and my parents were very close, he and my mom are still very close even with us getting divorced and I don't want that to ever change and I was very close to his parents also.
Neither his parents or my parents were the interfering type of people at all. They never tried to run our life and they never stuck their nose where it didn't belong.
I'm on my own except for my daughter and she's now moving 4 hours away.
I have family back in Ms. One of the reasons I live where I am now. I was the oldest and mom to my siblings. They fight, argue and start rumors about each other. They've decided I'm not their sister and that's okay with me. I never felt I belonged in that family.
Home is where you make and family doesn't have to be blood related.
