and instituting a fair-tax, collected at the cash register, of 30%. It'd put millions of tax professionals out of work, but maybe they could be folded into another government agency like National Healthcare, which a fair-tax would help pay for. It'd get illegal aliens paying tax out of their under-the-table wages. Necessary items like food wouldn't be taxed at all, but luxury items like SUVs or plasma TVs would automatically have tax figured into their sticker prices. 30% would probably quickly grow to 50% or higher, but I'm so sick of the unnecessarily complex forms and unfair loopholes that adorn our present graduated tax system. Agree???
And how do you go about taking a bunch of tax qualified professionals and rolling them into a new field? I don't have a problem with the so called fair tax because of the tax professionals though.
And who decides what a luxury item is?
The whole illegal alien issue shouldn't be a motivation for such a shift. Illegals need to be dealt with and pay into social security and taxes just like anyone else. I agree. But I don't think we have to change our entire tax system to make that happen. We need to increase the fines on companies that are caught employing illegals. Make an example of a few of them... scare the companies out of willingness. After all, companies that hire illegals SHOULD be run out of business. After all, they are stealing jobs from legals in the interest of not wanting to pay a fair wage.
Having worked in a tax office for a few years, I've seen my share of so called unnecessarily complex tax forms... but thats not a cause to change the system either.
And yes, those loop holes... they need to be closed, no question. Again, not a reason to change the system.
I think its perfectly reasonable for those who can afford to pay a higher tax to do so. And when I am in that bracket, I intend to do so as well.
What I would really like to see happen is a little stringency among the welfare system. It makes me sick to see the way some people sponge off of the system by literally having a new baby every 5 years by a new man at the threat of losing welfare benefits and having to get a job. I've seen people repeatedly, like 3 or 4 years in a row voluntarily fail to pay their heating bill because they know that when it gets shut off, they will be able to appeal to social service agencies to get it turned back on, so that they can once again fail to pay it... all the while chain smoking cigarrettes at what, 6 bucks a pack... while their children play on their new wii system which tax payers paid for... somethings drastically wrong THERE!
Affordable health care and no uninsured children is a reasonable thing to ask the government... but I don't see how doing away with the IRS and adding a new luxury tax makes this MORE attainable. If anything, add in a new luxury tax to make up for some of what is out of balance, but still keep the income tax... otherwise, those who count on the income tax breaks... how do they ever make it?
I dunno. I'm gonna have to chew on this some more and get some more information. I'm admittedly ignorant to the idea of how this could possibly work, but intelligent people wouldn't even suggest it if there wasn't more to it than I am gathering.... I plead ignorance.

Necessities would be defined as food and housing (I believe that's Huckabee's proposal). Everything else would be fair game to the tax. Cigarettes and booze would probably be defined as a "sin tax", like in Canada, and taxed even higher, which would probably cause some Americans to quit smoking and get sober, which I think would probably be a good idea, but that's just me...
Isn't doing away with the forms and getting our full income every paycheck a good idea-? We can then budget around our needs at the cash register.
I see a way to skirt the cash-register tax by bartering...! Wouldn't work on automobiles, though, where title transfers have to be run and thus reported to the state (and probably federal) government.
