Maybe do something new and unusual at home, like laying a big puzzle. That requires patience and some teamwork.
My idea of romance is in every day mundane things done together, grocery shopping, working in the yard, holding hands, walking the dogs, sitting on the patio talking, just spending time together no matter what we're doing.
Have you asked your wife what she sees romance as and then both of you give and take. Relationships are about both partners getting their relationship needs met and sometimes that takes both people bending to meet the other's needs.
I agree with Rosykitten, don't compare your wife to your ex-wife. They're two completely different people with different ideas, different ways and shouldn't be compared.
This could spark up the romance, can't hurt to try..

Take her somewhere she wants to go...but surprise her...don't tell her where....just say somewhere...go a way she may not know.....watch a sunset or sunrise.
Scavenger hunts are good too...notes from the door to you....mirror messages...vague or detailed up to you...
The chase was worth it before...right??? Make it fun!!!! You can spend a little or as much as you want...
Love is a small package with great rewards!!!!
Surprise and mystery one of the great tools you can use too!
Good Luck!

I believe this is what can turn an otherwise loyal spouse who would never in a milion years cheat, to go out and cheat. The longing desire that you describe can make one do things out of character, and all it takes is one girl to come along and pay you some innocent interest, convince you that you need to have your desires fullfilled, and the affair has started.
By writing, "I know I miss it so much I'm so close to just going to enjoy a nice romantic evening with someone else." proves this theory, because having a romantic evening with someone else is cheating, and if you aren't aware of this, you're a perfect candidate for a cheating spouse to-be.
This is your opportunity to do something about it, and I don't read anywhere that you've tried to tell her that you need to feel more romantic or that you've taken any steps to try to make it happen. It sounds like you are blaming your wife for the lack of romance, instead of looking at what you can do to re-light that fire.
I wish you well.
