Lack of communication and commitment

My relationship with my boyfriend is such a roller coaster, and some days I feel incredibly connected to him, while others I feel distant and alone. I can't continue to go through this, but love him and care for him so much and so deeply.
As of this past month, we hit a wall, and things started to feel stale. I was the first to notice this, and my feelings for him haven't wavered or changed.... he reassures me some days how much he is into me and likes me, and then other days, he's distant, doesn't call or text all day, and isn't very responsive. We used to see each other quite frequently during the work week and on weekends, but as of weeks past, I have found myself being the only one pursuing time together during the week, and he's come up with a few explanations/ excuses or pushed it off before. It makes me so sad that things have changed between us. I usually hold all of my emotions inside about this, and I try to keep from talking to him about my feelings (never the one to text first either) out of an extreme fear of seeming needy. Now, I'm terrified that my willingness and enthusiasm to hang out has pushed him away. Last week, I got so angry and upset about his blowing hot and cold that I lightly prodded at a break, and suggested that if I continued to be unhappy, I would break up with him. He told me how much he liked me and wanted things to work. He also suggested that seeing each other less during the work week would be best since he gets home and is very tired, and I would usually only come over around 9PM when he wanted to go to bed- this is what we had been doing for 5 months with each other and it seemed to work fine. I feel as though since we've seen each other less during the week, it's completely ruined our connection, and stopped us from growing as a couple, and made things grow stale between us. One would expect that distance actually makes the guy want to see the girl more, but I've found that even when I don't pursue him and give him the cold shoulder, not much changes. Day after day, I wonder if he'll want to see me or talk to me. I blindly agreed to seeing each other less, even though I secretely was angry. I was the one who brought up the conversation and told him I was unhappy and wasn't sure about the future of our relationship. Week after week, I find myself having to have this conversation with him, and then finding that he is just as shitty at day to day communicating and relationship responsibility as before the conversation. It makes me angry that he tells me he wants to keep me and work things out, and how into me he is... but selfishly says he needs more of his own time during the week, doesn't call or text, yet has no problem using my car when he needs it and getting his laundry done here. It's a take and take and take relationship- yet I feel like it's in my head, and I villify him too much.
I don't know how to compare this to a healthy relationship, because all my past ones I felt suffocated in and needed more personal time. Now that I'm with someone who originally, wanted to spend every day with me, but now, wants to see each other less, but still wants to be with me, I am so confused. Shouldn't my boyfriend want to see me a few times during the week?
He is big on hanging w/ his friends and roommates, and playing video games and all that.. Now, this makes me feel like he would rather spend time with them selfishly than pick up the phone and call me or want me to come over.
I HATE to seem needy. I am trying so hard to restrain myself from saying "we need to talk again" out of fear that it will become a cycle of me saying I'm unhappy, us talking, him never following through, and it starting all over again. When it's good between us, I am head over heels for this guy. That's what makes it impossible to leave him. I also constantly have that small voice in my head that he's actually not doing anything wrong and that I'm the bad guy-- asking too much from him. Is it normal to not see each other as much during the week as the relationship progresses? Am I expecting too much?

I have a very busy life and many times i just want to be left alone when i come home - not listen to anyone's problems or pull an allnighter having sex.
Also, at some point a relationship reaches a point where it should progress and if it doesnt , it becomes stagnant and frustrating.
Have you talked about moving in together or anything like that?
And living together everyday does get tedious.
Something that caught my eye was your comment about him spending time with his friends is selfish. So does that mean you think he should "sacrifice" and spend his time with you instead?
Wouldnt you think that spending time with you is as much for his personal enjoyment as spending time with his friends?
At the end of our time here in this life, the only thing we have is ourselves - so wed better spend our time here doing what makes us happy. Your boyfriend is doing that.
