There are books and groups about being Adult Children of Alcoholics/Dysfunctional families, that can be very helpful. We get a better idea of how we are relating in unhealthy ways that we thought were normal, and how to replace those unhealthy patterns of relating with better ones.
one that I've used is "12 Steps a Way Out'; some others are the books by Janet Woititz, who also has a website if you want to google on her name.
We might find the best partner inthe whole world, but if we don't know how to handle conflict, or balance our needs, then we don't know what to do with that best partner.
