Have I made the biggest mistake of my life?
I don’t have many friends to talk to about this. Or any, really. I’m feeling very alone and haven’t gone a sober day in months. There is something that has bothered me nonstop for years that I need to let out. This is going to be long and I don’t expect anyone to stick with me through it, but just the thought of someone hearing me out feels a whole lot less icky.
Seven years ago (2013) I met someone incredible. Let’s call him Leo.
Leo and I shared many things in common. We were both creatives with creative jobs and creative ambitions. We enjoyed learning new things and having honest conversations. We genuinely craved each other’s company and cared for each other. Leo was my person—there was no denying that.
Two years into our journey, I couldn’t help but question why we never made our relationship “official”. Leo lived an hour away, which meant I could only be with him on my days off. I trusted him and we spoke constantly during our days apart, so I really had no reason to believe he would be seeing anyone else. I suppose I only wanted a label for security; to confirm that we both felt romantically about each other and wanted to move forward together.
Pressing this did not go over well, and Leo shut me down. Oof. What?
At that point, I didn’t know what to believe. Was the feeling something I had concocted in my head? Two years is a long time to be with somebody and not want to be WITH them. It kinda broke me. I was hurt and felt like a fool. I downloaded Tinder. F*ck it, right?
A few weeks in, I met someone I recognized from my hometown (let’s call him Derek). Derek wasn’t a very attractive guy, but a nice guy. Right off the bat, I told him about my Leo bullsh*t and I agreed to join totally platonic hangouts with his friends. I mean, I wasn’t exactly emotionally available. Why did I even download Tinder? I’m an idiot, clearly.
Little by little, the platonic hangouts became a little less.......platonic. Before I knew it, I was spending nights at Derek’s place. Derek quickly expressed his interest in me and told me things that I desperately wanted to hear from my previous interest. Whatever. My heart was full. He asked me to be his girlfriend. I said yes.
Oh sh*t. I’m still in love with Leo.
I reached out to Leo to tell him about Derek and arrange to gather my belongings. We met at a sporting event to exchange our things and have a heart-to-heart in the bleachers. I told him that I had strong feelings for him but felt rejected and disheartened. Leo broke down and said that it was not his intention—that I was the woman he was interested in and there was not a close second. He stated that he believed modern relationships were a false paradigm, and didn’t want to risk tacking on expectations to something so purely great.
I was speechless. I hugged him. I grabbed my things. He wished me the very best in my new life with Derek. I never heard from Leo again.
Roughly five years later, Derek and I are engaged with a house together. We haven’t had sex in months. We both have our nose in our phones after work and there are very few things that we agree on, so we often avoid communication to spare us from arguments. I do love him—but more like an annoying sibling. I feel alone and have resorted to alcohol to muffle the noise. I’ve stopped taking care of myself. Every day, all I can think about is how much better things were before I met him. I feel so awful for thinking that way. I miss Leo so much. He was right. I miss the honesty, the passion, the interaction. Even if I ended things with Derek, there is obviously no going back to what I had at this point. I don’t know what to do. I feel sick and ashamed that I’ve let this take such a toll on me after most of a decade.
TLDR; I let go of a really great thing 7 years ago and it’s haunting me daily

So mad at Xfinity! They're trying to charge me $115 per month for the same service I had been paying $50 the last four years. I took the equipment to UPS for shipping and cancelled my subscription today! Next door was a cookie shop called Crumbl. I had heard of it before but never went in until today. I don't need one more sugar fix, but maybe it will help with my sad) grieving heart....$15...

Which explains the mysterious fevers and my extra fatigue. I'm so glad I pushed for answers.

What you need to do is concentrate on making your current relationship with your fiance' better. (When is the wedding?)If it is driving you to drink just to get through it, and you giving up on taking care of yourself... then that is not good. If you two are burying your heads in your phone, you suggest that you two get up and go out and grab some dinner right now, or take a walk and talk about your day, watch a movie at home together. etc. The point is, you have to start... somewhere.
And please do start taking better care of yourself. Get out and exercise, start cooking some healthy meals (something you two could try to do together?). Do self care.
You can't run or hide from these problems. Time to face them head on.
Your past relationship with Leo is not relevant right now. What is relevant is that you are unhappy and are with someone you may not really want to be with. I think it’s ok to explore if that’s the case and if not, decide where you go from here. You are only 26. I mean, you have a lot of life ahead of you, if you are lucky, so why make all your happiness contingent on the one that got away or even the one you are with now. Have you ever just been you, alone?
I agree on taking care of yourself and just focusing on that at the moment.
I failed to mention, toward the end, Leo did say that he was unaware and hurt that I wanted a label so badly that I decided to find it in someone else. He explained that he would have given me what I wanted if it meant not abandoning what we had. I had already chosen Derek by then, so I stuck with my decision. I could have changed my path right there—but I didn’t. Even in that moment, I wasn’t sure why.
But you are all so right. Leo and I are in two very different places in our lives and it’s healthy to work on improving the life I’ve built. However, I’m not sure if I can just stop thinking of him. I still care for him, wonder how he’s doing, etc. It’s difficult for me to work out the kinks with Derek when my first thought is often “I never would have had this problem with Leo”. It’s awful. Part of why I drink is because I HATE that I think things like this when I am sober and am not sure how to switch it off.
You can try redirecting your thoughts when you think about him or try grounding yourself in the present. I think you are unhappy and instead of really addressing it you’re distracting your self with these other thoughts. Maybe working with a therapist could help you. Drinking as a coping strategy ain’t good.
My take is different from yours but I only know what you have written. Leo told you what he wanted you to hear at that last visit. He might not even have meant it or maybe he was actually scapegoating you. If you had just told him what you needed, he would have complied -- okay, right. Its your fault then, huh? Not his, he is blameless. That stuff about the labeling of a relationship is BS and what it means is don't ask more of me than I want to give. Some people do the scapegoating thing to make the other person the bad guy.
So now we are at today. Deal with today. You let Leo go for a good reason and now you are looking backwards and torturing yourself. I bet Dereck knows or suspects you don't really love him. He is caught in the same trap you are. Talk to him, stop drinking, get sober and clear and work on fixing what needs fixing within yourself. You might find Derek is really the one once you work on you. Or you might not. You have what sounds like magical thinking about this Leo guy.
You were hurt and unhappy and wanted to feel better and for some time Derek did help that however that isn't fair for either of you if the feelings aren't real or Derek is second to someone else
Drinking daily is a big problem that I would address right away.... There is good help to be had and it's good that you're recognizing that it's no good
There's nothing at all wrong with being on your own for a time .... Take time to heal and address what's important within you and for you
Address the alcohol dependency..... AA is free and it's an amazing program that's saved a lot of lives
If you're able to get into some therapy as others have mentioned
Leo didn't want what you did and I know that, that had to hurt so it's understandable why you were so vulnerable.... An hour really isn't that far away at all if you both wanted it to work it would have
I'm not writing that to be hurtful
I would get some help for yourself and take time to heal.... Another hug.....xo
Be strong I believe in you!
