In truth, his entire life had been plagued by his inability to commit to even the simplest of things. He had flip flipped back and forth on an engagement to the only woman who put up with his crazy behavior for many years until ultimately she'd had enough. He bailed on all his children and they all had to be raised by grandparents. He didn't own a house despite having a good career because he couldn't commit to one. Moved around constantly. Changed cars constantly. Couldn't commit to a relationship or a single woman and was secretly married the entire year I dated him AND cheating on me with another married woman AND was likely still married to his 1st wife as well (meaning he was married to two women at once). Of course, I didn't find all this out till the end. But the point was, the commitment issues, inability to communicate basic things, and flake outs like this guy is showing you, were the signs that I DID have all along. I sat around trying to blame myself and figure out what I had done wrong or what I could do to make him behave like a stable, rational human being. But it had absolutely nothing to do with me. After I found out about all the other women, I exposed all his secrets to everyone and he finally went and got help, where he was diagnosed with several personality disorders and other psych disorders. He had been a mess his entire life and always will be. I walked away and my life is so drama free now. Funny thing is, as much as he loved to do the ghosting thing (for weeks or even months at a time) when I was finally done with his crap, he wouldn't let go. He tried every method on earth to get back in touch with me, despite me blocking him everywhere, for over a year after I walked away and stopped talking to him. I ultimately had to get the cops to tell him to stop contacting me. This guy is playing games. Period. End of story. Whether or not he has the self-awareness to realize that is a different story. But that's what he's doing. And in my experience (and I did a lot of research on this behavior during and after the fact), they never change. Realize that none of his behavior is acceptable and none of it is your fault. None of his excuses mean anything and you deserve to be treated with respect. Walk away.
