Ex's are an ex for a reason. And for the most part, those reasons don't change, we just prefer not to see them.
Kidsintowe is right on--- and ex is ex for a reason.
But I did try to be friends with him still. But then he betrayed me, so, he's blacklisted from my world.
But... in regards to your situation I would say... that if he is causing more stress than he is taking away, then his friendship is becoming pointless. If he is messing things up with your life, when you have moved on and found a different form of happiness, then maybe you should just tell him he can't talk to you any more.
Its fine to stay friends with the ones whom you no longer have romantic feelings for, and who dont have romantic feelings toward you. Then there isn't a bunch of jealousy and emotional baggage to the friendships. The ex that I am still friends with I would just never date again, and see very cleary the reasons for that.
However, I think its best to cut ties with, or to be in very little contact with the exs who you still have feelings for, despite the fact that you know you should be broken up. If you stay in close contact with these people or try to be "friends" its just not going to work. Sure, from the outside it could look like you are friends, but its not legitimate friends if either of you still have feelings. Its just torture and draws things out, as well as keeps you from moving on to your next relationship. And if either of you start dating other people, it could lead to jealousy or just feeling shitty.
I say, some you can stay friends with some you can't. But what ive learned over the years is although cutting ties with people you used to love/still love is hard, it really is sometimes for the best. And look at it this way... yeah maybe you can't be as close with that person anymore, but now there is an opening in your life to be close to another person like that. So really there are more opportunities.
Another of my exes and I have been friends since we stopped dating nearly 10 years ago. I stood up in his wedding and gave a speech. We even danced to one of our old songs, decided it felt weird, and stopped. =P
I mostly don't talk to the others, but not out of bad endings... just because we've moved on with life - and I'm okay with that.
Sometimes, we just have to let people go in order to move on fully. (:
