Maybe for some there is a certain level of pain?
All I did was put off the inevitable. I sacrificed my happiness to be with him. That kind of "love" brings you pain. To be happy in a relationship I suppose you need to find someone who fulfills your basic needs, and you fulfill them in return; you need to find someone who will allow you to grow, not hold you back.
I'm sure it's possible, as I've read many posts in this group about people who HAVE found that. I have yet too.
But, when it comes to love, I think the question is -- what is the root of this hurt? Is it pain or is it suffering? There's a big difference. Pain has a purpose. Suffering is true torture because it has no meaning. Pain is bearable. Suffering for no reason is devastating.
Ask any woman about child labor. How was it?
Would you do it again? Most women will answer: It was painful, but I didn't suffer. I would do it again.
If you think there's no purpose to your emotional hurt, you'll just want out. You'll run from your responsibility, your vows...you'll run from it all just to get relief from an unbearable suffering.
But if you can come to understand why you're in a painful situation, then you'll succeed to make it through. Why is this happening to you? What are you supposed to be learning from all of this? Can you see how your relationship problems are really an opportunity for you and your partner to become closer and even more in love?
So, to answer your question in a long-winded way(!), Koolman, I think it is a given that love cannot be pain-free. We just need to figure out where it's coming from and does it have a purpose.
It still breaks my heart on a daily basis to think about a life that maybe without him.
I want to share with you a piece of poetry from one of my favorite books Kahlil Girbran's - The Prophet: this is his piece on LOVE
Then said Almitra, "Speak to us of Love."
And he raised his head and looked upon the people, and there fell a stillness upon them.
And with a great voice he said:
When love beckons to you follow him,
Though his ways are hard and steep.
And when his wings enfold you yield to him,
Though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you.
And when he speaks to you believe in him,
Though his voice may shatter your dreams as the north wind lays waste the garden.
For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you. Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning.
Even as he ascends to your height and caresses your tenderest branches that quiver in the sun,
So shall he descend to your roots and shake them in their clinging to the earth.
Like sheaves of corn he gathers you unto himself.
He threshes you to make you naked.
He sifts you to free you from your husks.
He grinds you to whiteness.
He kneads you until you are pliant;
And then he assigns you to his sacred fire, that you may become sacred bread for God's sacred feast.
All these things shall love do unto you that you may know the secrets of your heart, and in that knowledge become a fragment of Life's heart.
But if in your fear you would seek only love's peace and love's pleasure,
Then it is better for you that you cover your nakedness and pass out of love's threshing-floor,
Into the seasonless world where you shall laugh, but not all of your laughter, and weep, but not all of your tears.
Love gives naught but itself and takes naught but from itself.
Love possesses not nor would it be possessed;
For love is sufficient unto love.
When you love you should not say, "God is in my heart," but rather, I am in the heart of God."
And think not you can direct the course of love, if it finds you worthy, directs your course.
Love has no other desire but to fulfil itself.
But if you love and must needs have desires, let these be your desires:
To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night.
To know the pain of too much tenderness.
To be wounded by your own understanding of love;
And to bleed willingly and joyfully.
To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving;
To rest at the noon hour and meditate love's ecstasy;
To return home at eventide with gratitude;
And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips.

Relax and accept the sweetness of love as it rolls over us, try to sleep through when it's not so sweet-?
In my case, I have not found love to be without any pain. Even if it's just the pain of not knowing what the future will hold.....
I have found, however, that out of most pain comes self awareness. It's the lesson we need to be searching for. I believe God has a way of placing two souls together that need just the healing that the other can bring. Often, that healing comes from truths revealed about ourselves that are not easy to hear, or admit to. If it's a true and deep relationship you desire, there will be some pain that comes along with it.
