Catholic Annulment

To any one going thru the process, or thinking about it and wants some support...

Saturday I received the Decree of Nullity, meaning I am free to marry again in the Catholic Church after my previous Catholic marriage and civil divorce. If you have any questions about the process and want answers and support from someone who has "been there, done that", feel free to contact me.

PS - This is not an invitation to argue the pros and cons of the Catholic Church and its doctrine. This me offering my experience to others who may be going thru same thing.

I need to do the same thing. I am legally divorced and my current BF is not Catholic so not sure if I will have another Catholic wedding but I'd like to have it blessed (if possible) and be able to take communion. How long was the process? Thanks!

I submitted my petition and documentation (certified copy of divorce decree, cert copy of marriage license and cert of copy of Baptism certificate w/ notations) to my parish priest in March 2011. After he reviewed it, it was sent to the Diocese in April 2011. An affirmative decision was granted in late November 2011. The appellate tribunal upheld the affirmative decision on July 11, 2011.

So it took about 16 months. But the process actually started in May 2010 when I finally decided to bite the bullet and get the annulment petition paperwork and start answering the questionnaire.

I was raised Catholic but no longer attend Mass... I'm curious, What sort of actions or inactions allow people to receive the Decree of Nullity?

There are several elements necessary to be present at the time of the marriage ceremony in order for union to constitute a sacramental union. An annulment is the process by which it is determined whether or not all elements of a sacramental union were present based on testimony of the petitioner and several witnesses. It is less about actual behavior and more about the mindset and/or intentions of the parties involved.

Birghtside, If it is evidenced that one or both parties did not fully concede and intend for the marriage to be a life-long commitment, one of the elements of a sacramental marriage is not present and therefore may be grounds for a Decree of Nullity.

A Catholic annulment? Wow. I didn't know one existed. I thought as a Catholic you could do whatever you wanted as long as you told someone about it. (; Sorry Scarlet. I just had to go there once...

I also googled it a bit and I think I understand.... If it can be proven that on the day a person took their vows.. that they never really intended to adhere to those vows.. came to the alter not fully willing or able to committ to the vows... etc..

Since when does ANYONE in this group need an invitation to talk about ANYTHING?

And really, since anyone at any moment can change their mind about anything, proving that a party at the exact moment of a spoken "I do" didn't mean it for life is next to impossible. But, this is the Catholic church. And they can do anything. Including little boys. =O
