In the presencec of known hostile people
What do you when you are forced to get along with someone who you dont get along with or possibly know you should keep your distance from?
I should have known times would come around like the holidays when an abusive family member would stop by while I care for an elderly parent. My younger sister moved out but still visits. To avoid conflict I keep all interactions with this sister strictly casual and avoid topics that trigger her hostility you can say that is controlling or enabling but it is the only thing that works and sad that I have no choice in the matter due to other crazy ramifications which would prove to be a waste of time and energy… Meanwhile she can bring up what ever irritates her about work experiences and how terrible other people are at the office and do it fpr sport not like it is really bothering her so I just let it go on and wait.. and think of something like... Well would you like some egg nog? As I hang around waiting for her to move her care while she is being casual. My younger sister has been largely unhelpful with caregiving but visited on Christmas Day.
Christmas was stressful for me and nearly missed due to nonstop house repairs, caregiving, and exhaustion I could only hope to write out a few cards to people who wrote me and take it upon myself to bring them to their houses and deliver them but I first had to check the antifreeze and as I was doing that and found that their may be more trouble with the vehicle than I thought I then had to proceed to try and fix a problem to keep the vehicle going and that’s when my sister who parked in the street came to visit and walked up the driveway
I thought it was a good idea to run the errands delivering cards while observing and letting this special additive circulate in the cooling system of the special-needs van used for caregiving and in the mean time I was hoping for my sister to be gone before I got back but after returning home my younger sister was still present and had now parked her car sideways, blocking the garage.
The blocked garage prevented me from parking the van in the garage so I could pull down the door and pray hope and forget about it and hope the bars leaks solution I put in would work a miracle and keep that thing going.
So I had to go inside and asked politely for my sister to move her car despite feeling frustrated to say the least because this parking behavior has happened before and caused serious stress, physical strain, and conflict in the past besides my sister had plenty of space to park properly and ignored the guest parking area. This situation reopened old wounds from past abuse and inconsiderate behavior. And once again I feel unheard, disrespected, and forced to “keep the peace” despite ongoing stress The added stress felt unnecessary and deeply upsetting during an already difficult holiday.

Which explains the mysterious fevers and my extra fatigue. I'm so glad I pushed for answers.

Due to my increased paranoia, anxiety, and a panic attack over the weekend, my psychiatrist has put me back in a full dose of Zyprexa until further notice. Every time I think I'm getting ahead something happens and it's back to square one. I knew he was gonna do this but I can't help feeling disappointed. It is what it is.

I am having a lot of physical pain right now and in the same boat about tolerating not nice or nefarious people. What I do know is arguing and fighting with them does not change them. So I try to just put up a mental guard and most of the time just laugh at them, or feel sorry for them, inside my head. Not out loud.
Some people are high conflict people and Bill Eddy has some great books about this personality type. Reading his books has helped me deal with this type of person in a way that de-escalates their high conflict personality somewhat.
Reality is they will never be able to hear us, or do the right thing. So when we want THEM to change, it is fruitless and makes us more unhappy. They do disrespect other human beings and it is something we have to process inside our own heads. I think if we hold onto our dignity and self-respect, it doesn't matter what the other person says or does.
Holding tight to your dignity like a blanket wrapped around your body helps me (a mental image). Reading about high conflict people and their personality disorders helped me understand this is not about me and my lack of being. It is 100% about them and their sucky personality. Do not take how they are personally as about you yourself. They act this way to everyone and live a miserable life within their own brains. If she were my sister, she'd be treating me like she treats you. It is not about you as you. It is about their own miserable thinking.
And I agree with you 100% about how dealing with these high conflict, self-absorbed, or not nice people is a real downer. They can ruin the holiday if we let them and I am letting the ones in my family ruin my day as I write this. I hope to be able to let it be, let it go, in my head today. Thank you for writing this and letting it all out about your stress. It helped me see my stress with more clarity.
It does suck!!
I think Hasty gave you good advise
It can be really hard and painful when you're a full time caregiver and other family disappear
I went through this as well and I was so angry
It can really eat you up and it's not worth it
If you just don't get along I don't think that there's anything wrong with saying 'I'll let you have a visit with ? Parent and go off on your own to your room or elsewhere in the home
Then you don't have to deal with it
Big squishy hug...xo
And I was afraid that they would go rabid on me just for asking them to move their car which they finally did when she left. So she really did not move her car or care that she was interfering with the repair and it looks like I will continue to nurse the Van because we need it. And keep learning and adapting to the family situation as it is or with any new occurrences that come along some most likely will be predictable and expected and others may not. So Whatever tomorrow may bring may we have hope be prepared and ability to do our best in it or with it Thanks to all.
