The main important things that I've learned is that you really can't change others...only yourself and your own outlook, which can in turn influence those around you. I also know that I don't need to share my thoughts and beliefs with him. For one. He won't accept them and two, I need to respect his beliefs while knowing they are not true for me.
It's all very hard because we are raising children together.
I suppose maybe if you try to detach from his beliefs about the worlds unfortunate end, and try not be bothered if he cannot accept your understanding of the world? And if he tries to force his beliefs onto you, could you firmly and respectfully decline? I
I'm glad that you've found therapy helpful, dayDream, and I have had some brief experiences with it in the past. It is just so nice to unburden sometimes and the fact that the person doesn't know your background is helpful I think.
In all reality I think the truth is, he could benefit from therapy too, and possibly along with meds...but I'm doubtful this would ever happen. Maybe if we were to ever win the lottery and he could feel like he could focus on himself in this way and afford the help he needs.
Because like I said, he seems to want to live in these desperate situations. He quite enjoyed the movie The Purge, it was right up his alley!
