I have one ex as a "friend" on fb, but we hardly ever talk. Then again, I don't use Facebook as a primary socialization tool. I only use fb to keep in contact with those from my past, as in one day I may have some sort of rhyme or reason for contacting someone I used to work with or go to school with.
I would not be cool with my SO messaging, etc with an ex on fb on a regular basis. There is too much temptation and more often than not, one party was not as cool with the breakup as the other party. As in, there may be residual feelings.
It all boils down to boundaries and figuring out what yours are.
It's rare that exes can be "just friends" but it can happen. You're right to voice any concern but ultimately it's their choice if they want to keep them or not. If those people were/are still important in your life then you should keep them.
The truth is, that any contact in any form could be inappropriate, not just what happens on Facebook. You either trust your partner or you do not.
