I met and started dating a man a couple weeks ago. He was fairly new to town and we hit it off like gangbusters immediately - texting constantly and spending almost every day together. It became very intimate very fast.

Last week I noticed a couple things that seemed like potential red flags. He would act miffed if I had plans with other people. One day I was feeling sick and he didn't say anything in sympathy, just acted put off that I didn't want to spend time with him. We spent most of the day together on Saturday, but then again he seemed miffed I was going out with friends that evening. Again on Sunday I had lunch plans with friends. I had talked to him about doing something later in the day, but when I tried to contact him that day he kept blowing me off. Finally we met up briefly to walk his dog. It was strange from the get go. He started talking about trust issues and I asked him if he feels he can't trust me. He brought up a situation where I am traveling with a male friend over Thanksgiving as reason why he "hypothetically" could choose not to trust me.

This brought up a bunch of other issues. The conversation was strange, his behavior was strange, and I wanted to figure out what was going on. Besides this, we had planned to take a trip to Arizona together this week. I wasn't about to travel with someone if trust was this huge issue. I also told him I only sleep with someone if I intend to be exclusive, but I had the sense he was still active on online dating. He admitted that he was, but claimed that was no big deal. Basically what he was saying was that he expected me to be exclusive to the point of not even spending time with my male friends, but he wanted to be free to do whatever he wanted. Then he totally shut down the conversation and said we would never talk about it again. Basically threatening he would break up with me if I tried to bring up emotional issues again. Later via text I tried to clarify what I was saying so we could let it go, but he told me he did not want to discuss it any further and that was it for the night.

I felt shut down and completely dismissed. Honestly it came off as pretty misogynistic and controlling. Yesterday he put up a post on Facebook joking about a trans-gendered person who came onto him on POF, so I unfriended him. He was irate, even after I explained that my friends would never speak to me the way he had and that I didn't want to see his online dating escapades. He texted me all evening telling me how horrible I am, that I'm a "spoiled menace," calling me every name in the book. I thought about blocking him, but I felt like I needed the closure of dealing with it, calmly and without taking his bait. Besides, every nasty word he said was just more proof that I was smart to dig up his verbally abusive tendencies so early, before I'm attached.

I've never dealt with a guy quite like this before, but all my friends think he sounds dangerous, at least emotionally. He tried everything in his arsenal to hit me below the belt and make me feel like I was the one at fault. My question is how to go forward from this. I did block his texts, and he now has no way to get ahold of me. But I'm totally thrown for a loop. I feel like my instincts were so off in the beginning, and that makes me want to give up on dating entirely.
