The best sources of heme iron are shellfish, organ meats and red meats. Some good sources of non-heme are spinach (and many orther dark greens), beans and nuts. If you're watching your weight, be careful on the nuts. They are packed with calories!
Google it. You'll find a wealth of information on the various sources of iron.
I'm good with taking iron pills but my friend told me I should get a natural source of iron. I was thinking about getting a cast iron skillet, people say that they are alot of maintenance, but the food you cook in it tasted good.
Just a idea... iron deficiency is in part due to not eating properly, but it may also be somewhat of a developmental issue... sometimes I think my body just does not absorb iron very well... would say never has... eating well, definitely helps, but it is the iron pills that help keep the iron levels up in the low-normal range.
Also found out that calcium tends to inhibit the absorption of iron... drinking a lot of milk, did not help... now only drink milk in the morning & noon time... eat good amount of protein/iron rich foods at supper. Meats tend to be the best foods to absorb iron from... throw in some good green veggies eg. broccoli or spinach, etc. then you've got yourself a iron-rich meal.
