I've used brewers with my dog. Not effective in Florida. Have made up several concoctions but Revolution is working best.

What is Revolution? Does that (or the yeast) work on ticks as well? There's lots of Lyme where I li ve; my friends dog has it. I wouldn't want to risk that.

DON"T leave your dog outside where it can pick up fleas and ticks. All our dogs have been indoor dogs that go out for walks and potty breaks in the back yard. We have never had any fleas or ticks. Plus I make all the dog food from scratch. They have had ground brown rice mixed with fish and veggies with a special yeast we get from HOANA. I'll get the website.

I mix the yeast with calcium, zinc, golden flax seed meal, spirulina, chlorella, kelp, vitamin E, and other supps to keep them healthy.

I'm afraid the don't leave her outside won't work for this dog! She's a pitt puppy and needs lots of exercise. Right now she's in puppy isolation but I plan to take her on long walks, and we live in a Lyme area. Plus my daughter got a lyme tick in our backyard. My vet says the garlic pills aren't enough to keep her protected. So I feel stuck.

That's tough, friends of mine have a huge 140 pound dog, weirmerengue? giggle.... no, it's a rottweiller, they keep it inside, take it for walks around the block. Sorry you have ticks in your back yard, that sucks. WHere do you live? A vet may have their own best interests in mind. That veggie yeast does deter pests though.

I well remember in South Dakota, my vet said, flea dip, so we did. I could tell when I got him back it had affected his nervous system and poisoned him. have you googled for alternative natural protection?

I'm in Fl. Bugs 12mos/yr. Fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, worms. I have an indoor dog. Just going out to eliminate is exposure.

I read the info on Revolution, it's dermally absorbed, you put it in a place the dog can't reach to lick or hopefully to scratch although that back paw is pretty dextrous. we get mosquitoes here, so we have a backyard pond and every year it gets stocked with mosquito larvae eaters, so we hardly every get mosquitos in our yard. Out near the lake there are lots of bugs: no-see um's got me back in 2004 - I got 70 bites on my head that raised into dime sized welts and drove me crazy for weeks. I finally cut my hair short so I could get the caladryl to the spots. We also get sand chiggers out there, and since I have a virus and my system is already taxed, they eat me alive, so I don't go out there anymore.

Which brings me to the point - the healthier your dog is, the less likely bugs will be attracted to them. Bugs go for weakened immune systems. Also bugs go for females more than males. That tidbit is from my husband, who is like a bug.... LOL...he goes for females more than males too. giggle

Chiggers! No like-ms. No see ums bug me too. I'm a beacon for mosquitoes.

Natures Gate Tee Tree Lotion works for me, in FL, @ dusk.

I use tea tree and lavender essential oils when I out hiking around dusk. Just put a few drops of each into my palms, then lightly brush it on my hair, socks, legs, etc. The scents of the oils throw the bugs off. I heard that the bugs find you by following your exhale, so I also keep moving and that really helps. If I stand still I get surrounded.

I read about Revolution, too. It seems similar to Frontline, at least in how it's applied. Is it safer?
BTW, I live in upstate NY. Rockland county. Many parents do tick checks on their kids head to toe every night. I need to start as well. Ther's a place here that tests ticks if you find one on you; the one that bit my daughter wasn't engorged so she didn't need antibiotics.

Also, my dog's not healthy. She's a shelter mutt, came with kennel cough, possibly mange. She's getting healthier by the day though, and certainly bigger.

I have done the flea tick deops for years, I presently use frontline. I live out in the country where we have too many fleas ans ticks. as much as i hate to use these things it does work and my dogs are inside/.outside german shepherds. i have tried lots of other things but it just isn't strong enough and i know they suffer from fleas and ticks bites. scratching and iching is not what i like to see my pets doing.

Brigid, would you like some homemade recipes for your dog? We found a scroungy border collie at a trail head in 97, she was starving and his coat was full of matting and stickers. I fed her olive oil, ground up brown rice, tuna, wheat germ, tofu, veggies, and her coat was shiny real soon.

I'd love some vegetarian recipes for her! ( I plan to make it in my blender and I'd be too grossed out otherwise. )she gets her meet from her Wellness puppy food. We add in our food, which is often tofu, fruit, rice, veggies. We're feeding her in a Kong now, so ground up stuff might be good. The theory is that if she has to work her jaw and mouth so much, she'll stop chewing on us. I haven't gottten any bleeding wounds in a few days, but the rain helped. (I've been wearing hiking boots instead of crocs. So her teeth fasten on them.) Needless to say, we're working with a behavorist. she's really sweet, just "plays" with us too rough.

We are surrounded with fleas and tick, poison oak and ivy. I do use frontline very effective and no adverse effects. Then the poisen oak which we try to arradicate by just mowing it off. Every year it gets less and less. My black female german shepherd is suffering with it. Give her baths with tucnu, but still ichy. It breaks my heart to see animals suffer. I could take her to the vet for prendisone which might be a quick temperary fix. Anyone have any ideas i hate to see her suffer.
