I've been trying to minimize my disappointment about being offered the all oral TX, only to have it taken away by my insurance ending and the dr. not taking any of the new plans. I guess I didn't want to admit to myself how that sucks, and I didn't want to post it here and start another series of "Obama sucks and Obamacare will ruin the country" posts. (For the record, I think health care for everyone is a great idea, even if it's not working for me personally.) Now I read about how kale (kale! The veggie that scores the highest number on that nutritional value scale, along with brocolli, which my kids and I eat every day) can be bad for you. I just want to crawl into bed.
I do think it's interesting, though, that I stopped putting kale in my smoothies. I felt an aversion at the thought, though I love it steamed. Maybe the "problem" with kale is that Americans are so compulsive -- now that kale is the hot, cure-everything food, people are consuming massive quantities of it. I guess the only option is to do enough yoga to become a breatharian, as long as one doesn't breathe any air from China.
My one hopeful thing (and I offer this to everyone here) is that yogic wisdom says shoulder stand supports the thyroid. Put blankets or a mat under your shoulders to take pressure off your neck if you're over 40. I do 7 min. every morning, so hopefully that is enough to counteract the kale? It still seems a bit surreal to think of needing to mitigate the harmful effects of green vegetables.
Awh, Brigid, I'm sorry you're feeling down. At the same time you made me laugh - breatharian!
I know what you are feeling is temporary and so glad you're healthy enough to share about here.
The treatment thing - thats a big let down. We all want a fair shot at being being virus free.
The kale thing - LOL you are too funny sometimes. Yes everyone jumps on a bandwagon till the next shiny new red agon comes along. I get freaky about my supplements worrying about where the ingredients were truly obtained & what conditions. I agree that our inner gut may tell us what we should/shouldn't consume.
We know I'm a yoga-cures-all-my-ills fanatic, Plow, shoulder stands, head stands. won't it be funny if my osteoporotic spine cracks in half while I'm trying to "get healthy" doing yoga?
What Trissa said..... I totally agree. And I know how it feels, the frustration is intense. We are so so financially strapped right now, and I decided not to get insurance that was going to cost $4200 for the premium, when I don't spend that much. I don't go to doctors. I haven't seen anyone since Spring 2011. I'm feeling at the end of my rope here. We have shut off notices, so we won't be paying the 90 fine.
Kale eating doesn't affect everyone. Just some people. My thyroid seems to be fine. But taking a break from routines is healthy too. Sometimes I use kale, sometimes collards, sometimes spinach. I figure 3 oz raw a day is a small amount. Sometimes I have salads, sometimes I skip the salad and make popcorn and non-dairy strawberry ice cream with walnuts, oranges and strawberries. It's so good I feel so good eating it, it's got to be good.

Is better than sprouts and bread
Eaten with doubts and dread.
what? what am I missing here.. why is Kale bad for you? I do understand about the health insurance thing. I have been getting the run around for months and still can't even get signed on to say NO to what they are offering .. which is little help for most of us. So.. questions
#!: Are all orals even available now if you have health insurance or don't? (Didn't think they were)
#2: where are you getting that kale is bad for you? I have raw kale almost everyday-my green drinks pick my energy up
and I can relate to feeling discouraged... I really can.. like Mak said ,, not having the money to have choice sucks
So I only feel in control of what I put in my body,, my exercise,, breathing.. I have been doing breathwork for 30 years and it has literally saved my life so being a breatharian isn't a bad idea Brigid
I just re-read your first line.. O now I'm mad... I won't go on a rant because you don't want that but WTF? Obama is a sell out to the insurance companies.. your Doc won't take any of the new plans? And he wont' work with you? Have you signed up for any of the plans yet. I am so upset about this health insurance thing. It is double trouble for me. I make my money in the health industry which is hard hit by all this. People can't use services if they don't have insurance. Major sucks... sorry I'm supposed to be encouraging..how about just empathetic for now?
Thanks for the empathy, guys. It does help! And Sam, I got the "kale is bad for you" from Mak's post about thyroid problems from that family of veggies (too early to try and spell "cruciferous" or whatever) I signed up for Fidelis. 8 grand a year for my husband and me. Let's see if it covers anything.
I am not meaning to downplay your disappointment about not getting the new oral treatment, but have you thought it could be a blessing in disguise? We don't exactly know yet what the long term effects will be from that treatment, and maybe you will be fine without it for awhile.
What JB said. I agree. I'm waiting a couple of years before I think it's the cat's pajamas. Meanwhile, my hubs just suggested that you could steam the kale, then add it to your smoothie! If you try it, let us know? KALE IS NOT BAD FOR YOU!!! The entire cruciferous family (you spelled it perfectly, Brigid) has the possibility of the goitrins causing Low thyroid. The warning was actually only under the heading of Brussels sprouts, and for a long time I thought it was the only one to avoid eating raw. All cruciferous veggies MAY or MAY NOT cause a problem. The idea is not to live on them raw, as your only food source or eat more than a few cups a day of this family. Most people don't eat that much, so no need to worry about it. Just don't go living on a diet of kale juice, raw. :-) Besides that, raw kale juice is gross and bitter! LOL
Owquitit, it that a joke? How do eggs and kale interact?
jb, I did think about that. taking new drugs (well, any really) makes me quite nervous. In the past 25 years, I've only taken Advil, twice. And nutrition and homeopathics. But I don't think I can afford to wait long-term. Will they find out anything in a year? Who knows?
BTW, Trissa, is that a picture of you doing yoga? You look beautiful. Did you read the yoga journal article from a year or so ago about a woman who did ruin her spine doing headstand? She gave some chart of body proportions at the end to show if it's a safe pose for your body. It seemed really complicated, and I love headstand, so I put the magazine back, paid for my kale, and left.
An instructor here ruined her spine doing plow incorrectly. The pose is not the goal, its about the journey preparing the body toard the posture. She was placing her weight on her cervical spine instead of her shoulders.
I adhere to never doing anything that my body has reservations about. When our practice has developed the discipline for a posture, we can perform it safely, having received proper instruction.
We can't all do the same things as well as another because each body is different.
I like yoga because it is your practice, nobody else's.
Brigid, I ruined my shoulder from trying to perfect my chattarunga through force. More aptly, my ego ruined my shoulder. What a lesson I'm learning. I love cxr, vigorous planking & wild thing & headstands. Now I've been invalid for weeks! Has given me time for reflection. The whole purpose of yoga is to bring you to the mediTation, not the medication LOL.
Even world renown yogis alter their practice with age because of the accompanying body changes that occur with age. No matter how hard we try to fight it, it happens. I've learned to respect my body more through this injury. Ouch!

I do love your sense of humor, and of course i too believe kale and yoga are a winning combo....
