Coconut oil has made me feel so much better that I wanted to create a thread all on it's own rather than trailing off from the cholesterol one.
About 30 minutes after I took a tablespoon my mind cleared and my vision improved.
I don't know if this would be good for Hep C specifically - I seem to be more affected by the Epstein-Barr virus and perhaps chronic fatigue syndrome, and I can only say that it really helped the brain fog and a general inflammed feeling in my head. My vision was so bad I couldn't even read the words on the PC screen periodically so I couldn't work at my job.
Here's some interesting info about how they're using coconut oil with some diseases:

And here's all you ever wanted to know (and far more) about fats:

I have to admit I only scanned this article and will probably never read it all, but I thought this was interesting:
The membrane of every cell and organelle is a lipid envelope,
a thin fatty acid sliver that encases and protects the
internal cellular components. This bi-lipid envelope is far
more than isolation and protection, for linked and interlocked
within the membrane are literally thousands of peptides
(proteins) from the DNA, large and small, that form
the windows and doors of the cell.
start with a small amount, yes, and I think a good dose would be 1-2 T daily. It's great added to steamed veggies or soups, in baked goods, as butter substitute on toast. Also great for massage.
I'm listening to a YouTube video that says to take 50 ml, which is 10 tsp or 3 1/3 tablespoons. He says for Hep C to take twice that much. Almost 7 Tablespoons.
I use it a lot in cooking. No longer use Crisco for my husbands favorite cookies and pies.
I drink coconut milk in my coffee put it in my smoothies, and sometimes drink it plain.
The coconut milk I get is unsweetened only because I can add stevia to it and my smoothies instead of sugar which I avoid.
Thanks for all this great info on coconut oil and butter. perhaps I will up my consumption.
Wow I have never seen that before. I store mine in the cupboard too. usually have it there for 4 or 5 months before it is gone. I have bought 2 different kinds in the past. both organic. Maybe I should keep mine in the fridge before that happens.
I am so glad this thread about coconut oil was started. I'm almost 69 years old, and last week was the first time I ever bought coconut oil. Since I just finished an antibiotic for SIBO( small intestinal bacteria overgrowth) which has caused my persistent diarrhea for 8 months, I'm on a strick diet right now of homemade broth (bone broth), meat, eggs, and boiled un-starchy vegetable, and good fats. Being able to put coconut oil on my cooked meat and in my vegetables is making them so much more appealing and rich tasting. And SandyDo, I use it like butter, which I can't have, and I love it. It doesn't taste sweet. You do notice a very slite coconut taste, but it's subtle. I do eat a gluten-free waffle every now and then since I can't have bread, and I spread some of the coconut oil on it. I'll be able in a week or so to start adding a few things at a time to my diet, but I'm forever off gluten, milk products, and sugar. The coconut oil and Stevia in place of sugar are a blessing!
Shadow, what brand of coconut oil was it that was spoiling? I've never had a problem with Nutiva. I do make sure not to use a dirty spoon when I scoop some out. In the summer when it's liquid I keep it in a pour jar with a lid, the one that comes with balsamic vinegar in it from Costco.
And I'm thinking I might try making a pie crust with it. Haven't had pie in years. I can use oat flour that is gluten free. Marilyn, so glad that you are getting over that SIBO. Is your new diet working for you? Two things cut the coconut flavor, one is heat, the other is salt. Personally I like it, so I leave it. I put coconut oil in all my vegetable dishes, and use it to make cookies and English muffin type bread with oats, corn or rye. I haven't had whole wheat in months now.
Just read an article on Dr. Marcola's website about how coconut oil can reverse Alzheimer's, and explaining about 'brain fog lifting'.
At the end of the article it talked about using extra virgin coconut oil, as the other kind has mold in it.
The article was titled something similar to 'Alzheimer's and Coconut oil'. He has got a great website.
It is kind of spendy but Cosco carries it and it is extra virgin.
I think next time I feel foggy I will break out the coconut oil now that I have read some studies on it.
yes, kookie, it's generally very expensive, but the bottle at Costco is 2 oz shy of 5 pounds and is only $22 here, only about $4.50 a pound. Elsewhere as much as $15 a pound. And it's very very good.
Just trying out my new phone. Hence the extra periods. LOL
