Thanks for sharing this, Brigid. Avocados make a great dessert base.
Just remember you probably don't want to eat more than 1/8 of this at a time, as that would be 1/2 of an avocado.
And 1 cup is 16 T of cocoa. I generally eat 1 T of cocoa at a time.
This may be too rich for some livers and gall bladders. When I was in my 20's I ate a whole avocado and experienced a gall bladder attack. Felt like being kicked hard in the ribs on the right side of my body. My OB Dr put me on a low fat diet.
Maybe making 1/4 of a recipe using 1 avocado, 3 T agave, 1 tsp vanilla and 1/4 cup raw cacao powder would be better, so you don't have all that yummy yummy stuff crying out to you! Then split that with a loved one along with a nice cup of green or white tea.
I eat a whole avacado almost every day and it feels really good to my body. My diet has gotten more and more high fat over the years ( I used to eat high carb/low fat), and I feel better now. Lots of nuts, coconut, etc. I just worry about too much chocolate and agave, but with kids around, there isn't that much left for me.
I didn't know we were supposed to be eating low fat. I thought all that mattered was type of fat. Maybe I should rethink that. Also, I know Dr. Weil recommends low protein for Hep C, but I'm hypoglycemic and a bit more protein helps my blood sugar. But it's veggie protein, so maybe that's different. I'm not always sure what's the best diet, and it seems to change for me according to other factors.
I think this is something we can certainly look into more and come up with more information on the subject. quasar and ptriss, what do you have to add?
I'm sure the source of the fat is crucial, I'll agree with that. We eat a lot of avocado here. I probably eat about 1/4 a day. Some days none and some days 1/2, just depends. Tonight we had yams and broccoli with a huge baby greens and spinach salad with avocado and tahini. For dessert a homemade whole wheat tortilla with 1 tsp of butter and 1 T maple syrup heated and then spread on the tortilla, it was like a cinnamon roll.
avocados are anywhere from 71-88% calories from fat. hcvadvocate says Eat a healthy & balanced diet. Include a lot of vegetables and fruits; try to stay away from too much salt, sugar and fat.
But they don't say what is considered too much.
MAK1AH, Your recipes sound so yummy! Too bad we don't live closer; I'd love to share some meals with you.
BTW, the mousse recipe makes about 6-8 servings, and I just read you can freeze it and make it like ice cream.
Since we're talking food, what is your opinion on hot water with lemon? I did it for awhile for liver benefits, but then stopped on my dentist's orders because it strips the enamel off teeth. I read somewhere that drinking through a straw helps with that, but I'm not sure how.
It tastes like really rich chocolate. BTW, the recipe makes about 6 servings. I read it can be frozen, like ice cream, but I haven't tried that yet.
I guess the amount of agave nectar would really depend on the size of the avocados. For instance, the ones in my fridge right now are HUMONGOUS! I do like things bittersweet, though, like you Brigid, so I think I will start with a smaller amount of agave and try this recipe out. THANKS!
Let me knnow how much. I made a batch last night and went to under 3/4 cup. I think next time I'll go to a half. But if you try it first, let me know.
my avocados were huge as i said. Let me go weigh one.....ok, 11 oz avocado with a 2 and 3/8 oz of pit and skin. That's just over 8 oz each. I ended up with a lot of mousse! I think it could have used a wee bit more cocoa. I put about 3-4 T maple syrup in, and about a cup of agave.
What is agave? I don't eat sweets except for Stevia in my coffee and green tea. It's a natural sweetner made from the Stevia plant. Before my transplant, we were told in a class that Stevia is a good substitute for sugar.
