Congenital Hand Anomalies

Hey everyone,

My youngest son was born what a congenital hand anomaly on his left hand. He doesn't have any digits, but he has a thumb which is very fortunate. I came here for support and new information about this condition. I've been to Shriner's Hospital, but they said there is nothing they can do other than remove his nubums. I didn't think it was right for me to have them removed, because I feel it's a part of him and it should be his decision ultimately.

Like your son I was born with a hand anomaly myself. My fingers are there but no knuckles instead they are fused straight. Trust me that although your son may have difficult times ahead he will never cease to amaze you!! Also the touch bionics looks pretty amazing :)

I too was born with hand anomalies. I was born with a radical clubbed left hand, born without a thumb on my right hand, and I was born blind in my left eye. I wish your son and all others affected with anomalies the best of luck.

My child was born missing the middle fingers. Diagnosed as Ectrodactyly. Ectrodactyly, split hand, cleft hand. Involves the deficiency or absence of one or more central digits of the hand or foot and is also known as split hand/split foot malformation. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ectrodactyly. Several surgeries to close the split. We looked into help from Shriners. My childs pediatrician referred us to a doctor of genetics although no chromosomal defects noted, although some in the extended and immediate families had mostly minor anomalies, involving the hands, ears, and joints.. Parts of the middle finger Metacarpal bones were missing. My child is an adult now, has adapted with the help of gadgets, tools and implements available. Handles with with large, cushioned grips to help with weakness in the hands.
Interesting link about the bionics. Through out my childs treatment I met other children with similar hand anomalies and it was inspiring to see how well they are doing, speaking for my child and others we met, they do not feel anything missing. I wish you all good care, and the best.
